one other javelin question

Also, I noticed in one Javelin owner review that their '70s Javelin sunk like a rock. Did they ever add positive flotation? If so, when?

Oday Day Sailer Wareham, MA
Had flotation from the day 1

O'Day built the Javelin with positive flotation fro mthe very beginning. However, the original boats were not unknown for eventually having the foam get saturated with water from condensation and/or other leaks. This is not an O'Day-only problem, many boats from the 1960's have suffered the same problem. Perhaps the foam used in those days was not as moisture-proof? Many owners of Day Sailer Is have reported needing to dry out the foam, a Mariner owner or two has reported the same......They simply cut an inspection port hole into each flotation "tank" and let things dry over the off-season. Some have also added "water noodles" in the seats or under the gunwales to add more flotation. Later boats (like my 1979 DS II) had closed-cell foam (yes, it is really that white styrofoam blocks) and so do not have the saturation trouble. My 1969 Widgeon had that type of foam as well, but the flotation tanks had drains and I would still find water in there at the end of the season. Yes, O'Day did build at least one other 14' sailboat besides the Javelin. That was the O'Day "Puffin". I'll attach a photo.
