Hi all, Just priced the 12V cigarette lighter based power supply for my Garmin 12 GPS. I was amazed to find that it goes for a whopping $40. I actually am pretty sure I checked this out last year when I bought the GPS and probably just plain blocked it. First off, maybe buy some stock in Garmin. With those kinds of margins, you can't miss. But, having said that, and knowing the cost basis for this little bit of very basic electronical components and wire can't be more than $6, anyone know of any lower priced knockoffs available out there? If not, anyone want to go into business? :) Jim

Make your own cable

There are two sources for Garmin cable ends for a 12. There is the following URL which is about $12. http://www.gpscables.com/info.htm or pfranc (do a web search) which just have the ends for a donation. That can run you $10 for 2 connectors. You supply the wire and adapter plug on the other end. Good Winds Dave

GPS cables sometimes have transformers

I sprang for the Garmin cable after our electronics shop pointed out that the cigarette lighter thingy (in my case, for the etrex series) contains a relatively sophisticated transformer - it's not just a wire connector. This is similar to the ones you buy for cell phones. I still think they're gouging us at 40 dollars, but if you do plan to make your own, be sure you're not going to fry your GPS. best wishes Clive Roberts

Garmin 45

I know that the specs on my garmin 45 (older 48) show that the unit is capable of handling a large variance in voltage, eliminating the need to transform 12volt DC power. But I'd check your specs to verfy.

Wow! Thanks!!!

Just placed an order per Dave's post. Will be receiving my cable shortly at 1/2 the price Garmin is getting. Could have gone for the kit and saved another 20% or so. This Wolfe's outfit has a whole array of cables for all Garmins... power cables, antennae and PC cables too. Thank you all for your inputs.... Jim
