Try this!

Gail: Try this link. (http://www.baproducts.com/12vdc.htm) What we ended up doing was getting a Stainless Steel Caraf that holds about 10 cups. I got a Melita filter holder and a small kettle to boil water. We just pour hot water thru the Melita filter and have fresh brewed coffee (at the dock or on the hook).

slow brew

I have a 5-cup coffee maker from BoatUS ($25). It brews very slowly, about 20-25 minutes for a full pot. Starting it up is the first thing I do when waking up on the boat!

French Press

Hi, Based on a recomendation that I read on a previous thread, I tried a Frech Press. Now it's definately my favorite. Scoop a few spoonfulls of coffee into the glass container, add hot water, wait 4-5 minutes, press grounds to the bottom, and pour. Mmmmmmm!!!

What's wrong with...

A good, old-fashioned, stove-top percolator? Makes great coffee fairly quickly. I have to agree with Al, when I get up in the morning, I don't feel like waiting until the afternoon for my coffee to finish brewing. Cheers, Bob

French Press

This question was on the CWBB. about 75% of those responding use a french press. I like to grind the beans as I need them

look for plastic french press

I've used a french press for years. I found one at the outdoor store that has a clear lexan or plastic cannister. Fast and non-breakable. Also don't require filters just coffee and hot water off the stove.

Stainless Insulated

We just bought a stainless steel insulated french press from welcome-aboard.com. It's worth every penny!

We should have a coffee race - I'll bet a Melita single cup is faster than a percolator.

Perc-O-late!

Phil: Perc'd coffee is why you guys have to sell those bullet proof coffee mugs. It is also the reason that real cowboys.............. I hate Perc'd coffee (aka MUD).

Press-Perk-Bag

I go with a press when it's feasable. Under heaver conditions, I use a Perk. I admit perk is not the "best" presentation for the coffee bean but I've drank a lot of perked coffee on the water so it's got a traditional flavor :). When all else scares me I use a coffee bag and hot water. Past that, what the heck am I doing on the water?

gimballed coffee maker ....

get a single burner gimballed stove. i have a Forespar mini galley and have been using it for 22 years! It is a fast, cheap, and pretty safe cooking fuel. It fits most anywhere in even small boats. It is a very safe way to deal with boiling hot fluids. You can handle coffee, soup, hot chocolate or even Kraft Blue box MAC and Cheese -- even underway in the very worst of conditions. It has never failed me. You can even get a percolater that fits it. it is a little small but is usually plenty for me. Of course it will also do the boiling water/Mellita trick too.

Anyone who thinks...

perked coffee = mud has obviously never learned how to perk. The cup at the end of the rainbow is only as good as the skills of the person brewing it. I have had bad perked coffee, pressed coffee, drip coffee, etc. Give people choices of how to do something (anything) and you're just giving them a hundred different ways to screw it up. I believe coffee should taste just like coffee...no more, no less. I don't flavor it, I don't froth it, nor do I have to grind beans for it to taste good. I know I'll probably catch an earful from all the gadget weenies, but hey...this is my opinion. The key question is: Why is it that anytime someone posts a question about what coffee maker to buy it turns into a debate about which brew is better? Cheers, Bob

Best Coffe Maker

The best coffe maker is one which perks only once. It is an espresso coffe maker and it has a resorvouir of water with a little basket to hold the grounds then the top is screwed on. You sit it on the stove and the water boils forcing it up through the grounds and it comes ut a tube into the top. No moving parts, no plugs or heating elements, makes 1-2 cups of wicked strong coffee. dave

Large #6 Melitta Filter & Carafe

The system that has worked well for us it using ground coffee beans (ground just prior to use) and a Melitta filter with a carafe. My wife gets up in the morning and puts some bottled water in a pan on the stove and in the meantime she grinds the coffee beans. The coffee bean grinder uses comparatively little current so it doesn't take a really large inverter. Once the water is boiling just pour it into the coffee filter, which is sitting on top of the carafe. A variation on the above is to pour the boiling water in the carafe to pre-heat it, then back into the pan to heat it some more which is only a very short time, and then pour it into the filter setup. Once the coffee is ready she let's me know and I can get up for breakfast. You can vary this procedure to suit but this works for me! If you want to try some really good coffee check out Meinl from Vienna. Our favorite is the "King Hadhramaut" blend that has the famous Viennese full-bodied flavor but NO BURNED FLAVOR. Their decaf is really really great. Order via Internet and follow the order with UPS tracking to your home. Thanks good the laugh guys!

I never expected that a coffemaker would hit the hart of so many sailors. I guess coffee is a stronger drug that I thought. Congrats Gail! Now all you need is a wife to take care of it!!! ;-)
