I'm about to replace my dumb charger with a smart one (along with both battery banks). As I have some doubts about the previous owners wiring abilities (He was a Doctor! (sorry to you capable Doctors)) I'd like to make sure the primary wiring is sorted out correctly when I do this replacement. Additionally, I'd like to make sure I'm up to date on electrical management technology. Does anyone have a good, updated 12 volt wiring diagram for the H34 or the typical 2 bank system?

Read Calder First

The firist thing I did while we were looking for our 85 H34 was to buy and then read Calder's book cover to cover. Then I studied the sections on AC and DC untill I was prety sure I understood the basics. I then used the book as my bible when I needed to understand more than the basic information. I scrapped the charger, batteries, battery wiring and 1/2/Both switch on the first day. Charger was not regulated, not counting the fact that it was wited with Romex, and extension cord and a two wire to three wire adapter. My survey recomendations included a strong suggestion that I "fix" a large chunk of the wiring problems that existed on the boat. I added the following, 1 each - Zap Stop 1 each - 150 AMP Battery Combiner West Marine 1 each - MC612H Controller 1 each - 70-90 Amp Balmor Alternator 1 each - 5/16-18 Distribution Power Post (- 12VDC) 2 each - 3/8-16 Distribution Power Post (House & Starting 12VDC) 2 each - Blue Sea 9003 On Off Switch (House & Starting) 1 each - Keyed Blue Sea 9005 On Off Switch (Parallel) 1 each - 100 AMP Circuit Breaker From the alternator 1 each - 40 AMP Circuit Breaker feeds the line going to the house panel Also replaced the feed with Duplex #8 2 each - Group 31 AGM House Batteries (210 AH Total) 1 each - Group 27 AGM Starting Battery 1 each - Battery Charger 1 each - Temperature Sensor 1 each - Remote panel for charger I did not add digital multimeters because I have a good hand held Digital Meter. I did add MIL-SPEC test jacks through the face of the battery switch panel. In case someone is not familiar with MIL-SPEC (Military Specifications) The jacks I put in are gold plated jacks with tin plated over copper connections. Attached is the schematic I prepared in Visio 2002 which I can email if someone wants a copy. I will take pictures of the new battery panel and post them this weekend.

Both batteries were parallel at the charger and no way to disconnect them. Wonder if the previous owner ever was satisfied with his "fully charged batteries" My survey recomendations included a strong suggestion that I "fix" a large chunk of the wiring problems that existed on the boat. Please send Visio file

Thanks for your comprehensive project status. You've certainly done it up right! Would you please e-mail the visio file to (jerry.keto@opg.com). I am preparing to engage the services of a qualified marine electrician to give the system a complete overhaul and this will help greatly. I'll certainly share any feedback from the electrician. Thanks again Jerry

Done!

Files have been sent to all who requested them. The information is available in gif and in Visio 2000 format. I am working no redrawing the original Hunter wiring diagram for the 85 H34 in Visio. In the meantime my wife ordered a photo copy of the manual from Hunter for 20.00. The wiring diagrams are included in the manual but they small and not the easiest to work with but they are better than nothing. Ron, Is the drawing you are sending, the one from the Hunter Manual?

R

RON MILLS

YES

but I used the enlarger on my copier to increase by 150%. You should cancel the manual from Hunter as it is not worth $20.00. It has the information on the 25,27,30, and 34 but is not that specific. If you want I would be glad to send to you and you can copy what you want. The manual is very generic.

It's an H34 Manual

The photocopy manual we got from Hunter was for the H34 and does not include other models. It is fairly specific in the information it provides.

Jim

send one here too and I will scan it as pdf fiile

I would like the H34 wiring manual and will scan it as a PDF file so that we never need fax again. Thanks a lot. My fax is (coversheet) Jim Oursler, 972 583 5005

Manual and wiring

Ron & John - I would like to have copies of the manual ( have we determined that there is one specific to the H34?) and the wiring diagram. The fax number I put earlier had a mistake, sorry, it is 540 785-2652. Also, my email is eswift3@aol.com in case someone gets all this to email. Thanks - it would be much appreciated. Eric

Observation

The manual I have is the original that came with the boat. It still has all the warranty cards etc. It has wiring and plumbing diagrams for the H25,27,30,34, etc. I felt that it was sort of generic because I saw a Carver Manual and it was a huge binder. My observation is that since John only wanted information on a H34 that is all he got instead of being charged for all the models that were in the original booklet. It also has rigging info etc. I just personally didn't think it was what I would hope would be a manual with lots of info.
