Sail Maine, I believe you

As a matter of fact, I can't believe that my 20" might be the same way at home. I might be able to us it instead of the 15" I have now.

Sorry for my reading. I know it is poor right now. My dog is dying of bone cancer and I have had a massive head since I found out.

I have been looking for a bigger TV for my boat and was hoping your idea of removing the wall wart would work. I just wanted to clearfy.

Thank You Very Much,
Jim

PS
I still believe that all keel boats leak to some degree. It might be a very very minor degree but you can stop hydro static preasure.

Well, I understand the 12 volt thing.

I was hoping for something a bit smaller.
Then again I may have to tell the wife we need a bigger boat to mount the 19" screen on.....:)
Thanks for all the ideas!
I guess I am just going to have to go the the stores and start looking for the 120 volt with a 12 volt TV input because I sure haven't found anything reasonable that is advertised as 12 volt.

12v

Alot of home electronics actually do run on 12vdc, most have internal transformers that drop 120ac down to 12vdc, a few have external power supplies that do the same thing. Not all of them will be 12v, but a huge amount of them are.
It's cheaper for the manufacturers, because the actual assembly line doesn't change, they just have to throw in the right transformer for the destination country, everything else stays the same.

One more thing

I'm surprised that no one has yet mentioned that Radio Shack has a 7 inch, 12 volt DC, analog/digital TV.

I had been looking for something appropriately sized for my H28 (the 13 inch and larger sets are too big) and found one ($200) in a RS in Charleston last May.

It mounts readily with the tripod socket on the bottom. You will need some kind of external antenna, even if it is only a wire dipole in the cabin.

The set's tuner is lacking in sensitivity as you will see by the reviews on the web site. I had good results within ten miles of the CN Tower in Toronto with an external antenna. The hills in Pittsburgh might give you a similar result.

Another useful feature is the external audio and video input capability so you can see your camera pictures on a larger screen.

Check it out!

Now I know what a "Wall Wort" is. I know what brewers wort is

but I was wondering what brand of jargon was involved here.

I have the same setup you do. Most people don't realized how nice it is to find a TV with a DVD that runs on 12VDC. I in fact have two TV's on board that both run on a 12VDC supply from a 120 VAC source through a "step down" transformer.

But my real comment is more of a question. That looks like a Bose 151 hanging on the bulkhead there on the starboard side. Am I wrong? If not, nice sounds come from those.

One of my TV's is a small one, think about a 9" or so. I got it at Best Buy for about $150.00. It has a cigarette lighter plug for 12VDC and a standard 120VAC plug for the shore stuff. It has a DVD player in it. Toshiba made it. Ya just gotta hunt for it.

Most...

Most items that are designed to run on 12v will run on a range of voltages from about 10.5v to as much as 18v in some cases. My father-in-law was an electrical engineer and we used to have deep discussions about the ranges and such that DC rated items will run on. Most of these conversations revolved around him finding items for our boat that would or could be run on 12V.

It was kind of a fun game for him and I learned a lot from him about how to read schematics and open things up and by pass a 120v circuit to get at the 12V side. He even built me a 12V cigarette lighter adapter for my laptop years ago, late 90's, and well before they were commercially available for the brand/model laptop I had.

My TV has seen low 12's with the occasional dip into the 11's with a big current draw like my vacuum running through the inverter. It has also seen the full output of my alternator and it works flawlessly.

From what I see on my boat I have a lot less fluctuation of voltage than I do at my house. I'm actually staring at my power conditioner for my TV/stereo system and in the last 15 minutes it has ranged from 116.4 volts to 122.3 volts. Right now it's 118.6.. At 6:00 p.m., when all my neighbors come home, it can dip into the 108 range! My boat is at least as steady as that if not more..

Interesting, Maine Sail...

...I have two TV's with digital converters and my laptop running through bricks. I know they are all 12 volt core. One of these days I'm going to have to convert them to straight 12 volt so as to keep the inverter off. the inverter draws, if I remember correctly, about 18.5 amps a day at idle and I'm sure a lot more when drawing. More than that, I have a bunch of vampires plugged into the AC which are a pain to unplug when cruising so I don't but it all adds up. I'll bet it's worth 30-40 amps/day. Rick D.

Rick..

just be sure to read the warts or schematics. Many computers these days run on a 15, 18, 24 or other odd voltages, my Macbook being one of them.

You'd really hate to be chronically undercharging and undervolting a $200.00 laptop battery. While a 15 volt computer will probably run on a 12V source I'd be cautious. I don't dare to run my Macbook off 12V, and physically can't due to the MagSafe connector, so I purchased a very small inverter dedicated to only charging my camera batteries and the laptop but it is inefficient.

There is rumor that Apple will license the MagSafe plug and then maybe I can get a 12V device to run my computer off of. Actually, I'll probably convert back to a PC before that happens...!

Mine Sail, You Are So Right...

...my newish Toshiba is 19 volt. I just looked at the brick. I know they make a 12 volt adapter, but it's a pricey little devil. I doubt if the flat screens and converters care, but I'll take care care with the laptop! Rick D.

Yes...

Because it steps the voltage up from 12v to 19v. Heck even a replacement 120v wall plug for my Mac is $79.00!!

12V TV's

My boat came with a dealer installed Sharp Aquos flat screen TV (I don't have the model number close at hand) that runs on 12 volts. It was designed for 12 volts and the power cord has an in line transformer to allow 120 V AC supply. Bypassing this cord and connecting to 12 V DC works. Unfortunately my unit is not digital HD so I need to do something before 2009. I haven't checked yet but I'm guessing that other Sharp models will be powered similarly.

I am in the same fix, and I have a 15" Aquos. Sharp has abandoned the small screen market and doesn't make anything smaller than approx. 26" with digital capability. A converter is needed to make it work. Here's the reply I got:

"Thank you for contacting Sharp Electronics Corporation.

"We no longer manufacture TVs in that size. The smallest LCD we manufacture with that feature is a 26-inch unit. I apologize for this inconvenience"

Buy A Digital TV Converter

I brought two from Radio Shack. About $20 after the $40 coupon. Huge difference in reception. Small in size. Rick D.
