I'm adding a furling jib to my Hunter 23 and need to add link plates. I assume this is to raise the turnbuckle outside the anchor well such that the furling drum sits high enough for operating outside the anchor well. I further assume that I will need to cut the forestay to allow for the added length of the plates. One site recommends 12" linkplates. Have you done this? Where did you get the linkplates? Anything I need to watch out for? Any and all comments are appreciated.

My boat has it

but I didnt do it. They use 2 link plates side-by-side, and they're not quite long enough. the drum still interferes a bit with the locker, its a PITA. Somepoint in the future I'd definitly like to install a long over-center toggle tensioner, because with the furler getting to the turnbuckle is not fun. I'm going sailing tonight, I can measure how much length was added on my boat, and I reccomend adding another inch or two to that. another little thing..the furling line needs a myriad of blocks and fairleads to make it back to the cockpit, furl correctly, and not interfere with the locker. I still have to tackle this as well (I think it's going to involve a turning block on the bow railing)

Good info

Thanks for the info. I look forward to getting the measurements. Seems like most people have these things made at a machine shop. I have not found online where to buy anything like this. With all the Hunter's out there, you would think there is a market.

I don't use furling on my 23

but I do use a jib downhaul which runs from head to midpoint on the luff, then back to through the clew and up to the same midpoint, then down to the tack and so back to the cockpit. Total cost including line and fairleads, about $25. Peace of mind, priceless. It allows me to drop the jib quickly while bunching it up at the base of the forestay so it doesn't go in the drink. I have also just recently run my halyards back to the cockpit. I bought a Lewmar winch, two Garhauer stand-up blocks, an organizer and a clutch all on eBay for $120. So now I can single/short hand without any problems. Putting a roller furler on a 23 seems unnecessary to me, IMHO, and is a PITA considering the lack of room up front and the need to be able to open the chain locker.
