12 HP BMW engine ??

HelloThis is my first entry into the forumI am looking to buy a 30 ft CatalinaThe boat has a 12 hP BMW engineThe top of the engine sticks intothe cushion of the Settee Seat??This seems weird and maybe a fire hazardI know the Engines I have seen on otherCat 30's do not pertrude into the seat Any comments

anyone who performed or accepted an installation such as you describe probably has messed up a lot of other things.

12 HP BMW

My Catalina 30 also has a 12 hp BMW engine, but when the install was done the entire seat was raised about 3-4 inches to accomodate the higher engine. It looks like it was done by a cabinet maker, it's very professionally done. You could perhaps use the current condition as a negotiating point in purchase and plan a similar conversion to the seat yourself, however as Jack says I'd look for other things perhaps not installed well also.Mike TurnerS/Y Amity, Long Beach, CA

Insuffiecient Power

Another consideration is whether the boat will be underpowered. Later model C-30's typically have a 25HP diesel engine (for good reason). The earlier models were underpowered.
