Hello there, Please let me know what kind of fuel consumption do you have on you inboard diesel engine. I have 14 gallons fuel tank on my Catalina 25 and after 12 hours of motoring fuel gage show that it is still full. So I have a suspicion that gage is broken. Thank you.

Fuel Gages

Victor They are notorious for failure. Find the size of your tank. Keep careful records of the engine hours when you refuel. For our M25 Universal 21 hp, we get 0.483 gallons per hour on our C34. Our fuel gauge or sender broke 6 years ago. Never thought of replacing it. 23 gallon tank. 20 hours of engine time. 10 gallons of new fuel. Easy, never a problem. Stu

Fuel Gauges

From the Cruisers Forum http://cruisersforum.com/index.php?referrid=79 Basic Troubleshooting of Gauges: All Gauges: 1. Remove Sender Wire from “S” Terminal on Gauge, and Turn ON Instruments Circuit. 2. Test Voltage between “I” Terminal (External Power Supply) and Ground Terminal “G”. Tested voltage must match nominal voltage of the Gauge (ie: 12V Gauge must test between 10 - 16VDC), and the Battery Voltage. If no voltage - check Ignition or Instrument Switch(s) and/or Fuses. If tests less than battery voltage, repair or replace (Violet) wire from Ignition or Instrument Switch. If a Sender fails “Open” (Infinite Resistance), one or both (if Dual Station) Gauges will read Zero Scale. If a Sender Fails “Closed” (shorted - Zero Resistance), one or both Gauges will read Full Scale. Other confusing Ohmmeter results, such as readings lower than expected, could indicate a poor Ground Connection at the Sender Body (Sender to Engine Block). Check for pipe dope or tape on Sender Threads. Fuel Gauges: 1. Disconnect Pink Sender Wire from Gauge, and turn power ON. The Fuel Gauge should read ZERO Scale (< Empty) 2. Short the Gauge Sender Terminal to Ground. The Gauge should read FULL Scale (> Full). 3. Measure resistance of Pink Sender Wire to Ground. American Floats: 240 Ohms (Empty), 103 Ohms (½ Full), & 33 Ohms (Full) European Floats: 10 Ohms (Empty), 95 Ohms (Half), & 180 Ohms (Full) Automotive & other Float Switches may use other resistances such as 0 - 90 Ohm, 73 - 10 Ohm, & etc. 4. Disconnect Pink Wire from Sender on Engine Block. 5. Test continuity of Pink Wire. Zero Ohms from Block End to Gauge End - If not, repair or replace Wire. 6. Measure Resistance from Sender Terminal (on Block) to Ground on Block. Should read as per (3) above - If not, replace Sender. HTH Gord

fuel level

I have a length of wooden dowl that I stick into my fuel tank to determine the fuel remaining. I have marks for full,3/4,1/2,and 1/4. Its easy to maintain and easy to replace should the need arise.

M12 does about 1/3 gal hour at about 80% wide open

on 272. You probably still have 10 gals left ... see if you can top it off with 4 gals. But then let it run down to see if the sender starts working at a lower level. Vic "Seven"

Loose wire?

Hello there, Thank you for your help. Looking at the sender this is what I found (picture attached). Looks like there is one yellow wire that is just hanging down there. Catalina owner manual says that there are 2 wires should be connected to sender – ground (black) and blue or pink that goes to a fuel gauge. I’ll be working on this puzzle. Please let me know what you thoughts are.

Black = Yellow?

Altho' your manual describes the ground as a "black" wire, modern practice has been substituting "yellow" for DC ground (helps differentiate it from an AC hot). The other end of the small (#16AWG ?) yellow wire pictured is likely the connected to either a ground bus (or engine block) or to the Fuel Gauge "G" terminal (often under the "u" shaped mounting brracket). Connect the yellow wire to the tank (on of the perimeter bolts on the sender body), ensure that you have 12VDC at the Gauge ("I" Terminal); and it should work. See my previous post. "Pink" is the convential colour for the Fuel Level Sender (centre bolt) to Gauge "S" terminal. HTH, Gord
