Navy radio man, at one time. Played with crystal radios made from Radio Shack kits as a kid. Listened to the 1960 Mazeroski "hit heard around the world" on a radio I made, while riding in the backseat of our station wagon.

Not always is the location of the stations antenna are near the city. For example WIND in Chicago has its antennas in Gary Indiana. As Dave Points out pilots has for many decades use RDF or RNAV for position plotting... In the US you can check the appropriate Section Map at https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/productcatalog/vfrcharts/sectional/ for the location of AM Station antennas. I'm sure the Canadian govt also provides such maps too. -Jon
