hello my friend, looks like you have a lot of backstay tension on, a good bend to the mast. I will bet that, at 16 kts, when the sail hit the water and backfilled the sail in the greatest draft area. This would be parallel to the mast and about where you said it broke. Since that area is at an open angle to the shrouds and stays, you have the perfect spot and force to snap a mast. The sail became a giant sea anchor real fast! I have a friend in Canada who sails a Shark 24 in 45 kts of wind and pops a spinnaker! He told me that he "Twists up" about three masts a season and that's without a capsize!
