Tropical Storm Gert

TS Gert [TD 8] is that West African Storm mentioned in the Franklin thread.
It should make a Tropical Storm status by Tuesday.

High Pressure over the East Coast should push it way to Mid Atlantic and not hit any land masses, passing West of Bermuda.

A very large storm [not cyclonic] has just left West Africa. As has been the trend this 2017 season, they are much further south than recent years.

Good News...
The track it is following, has been travel 4 times this year and de-energized the waters leaving them normal temperatures or low ACE providers. The storm is strung out which inhibits cyclonic formation.

Timing is Tuesday for possible Tropical Depression formation East of the Leeward Islands [just like TD 8]

Pacific Coast has a fair weather High pressure which will continue the cooling trend in the NW. Southern Mexico continues like West Africa, spinning off storms much further south.

It is now TS "Gert" as of 4:00 PM EDT Sunday, about 200 miles off Cape Canaveral Florida.
And, it's heading NW, will curve to the NE and not touch eastern US...
That's the story today... Watch this space or the Weather Channel for updates.

TS Gert [Ex TD 8] just touched the 40 mph sustained winds [satellite measurement and not buoy or Hurricane Hunter]. The buoy said 35 mph.

But...
It is not expected to make Hurricane Status as TS Gert dies from being squashed like a marsh mellow and elongated {not good for cyclonic motion] by the East coast High pressure. It's expected travel is even over warmer than normal water temps. All intensity is in the NE part way away from USA.

Continue to watch the storm [not cyclonic] heading toward the Leeward Island one mini and one BIG, back to back!

IMHO the Big one could be threatening islands by Wed-Thurs.

The good issue of TS Gert is it de-engergizing the warm waters along the East Coast, therefore removing some summer stored heat. Lower energy, lower ACE.

Hurricane Gert is now full fledged Cat 3+ storm. The Storm [non-event] is now restricting Trans-Atlantic flights like New York to London and pray for the sailors and ships on that heavily trafficked, Atlantic shipping lane.
