Earthquake

Yesterday we had a scare down in the south east Caribbean there was an earthquake off of the coast of Venezuela it was 7.3. We felt it from the boat at anchor in Grenada. After that the vhf came alive with everyone wondering if a tsunami was going to happen. Luckily all we had was the boat vibrating from the earthquake. But it was tense until the tsunami watch was over.

:plus:

Yep... I think I would have tied a bumper to my anchor rode so I could find my anchor later, disconnected ASAP and motored out to deep water until things were known.

...and as you can see in the documentary photo above posted by JSSailem, all the boats are heading to deeper water!

That is a lot of seismic activity, JamesG161.

@agprice22 Not wanting to give you a false impression Andrew. It is a clip from a 2015 Action flick. The movie San Andreas. Far far far from a documentary, but the concept is the same. Bail out quickly and hope you make it to deep water before the wave breaks.

That one from the movie was funny. The Rock avoided the containers, why couldn't Redford?

On a more serious note... this one is REAL! Go to the 1:20 mark and really see what water can do.

Man, if that is anything close to real, I hope to NEVER be anyplace close to a tsunami.
Nope, nothing close to reality.
In a real tsunami, all the water goes away first, then the wave comes, so there's absolutely zero chance of doing what the Rock did in this scene.
That is the one good thing about a tsunami. If the water gets unusually low rather quickly where you are, that is a notice that a tsunami is coming. If you react quickly and have someplace to go, this could be what saves you.
In the AlaWai Marina in Waikiki, we all used to vacate the marina in a tsunami warning. With all those boats rushing to get out at once, it was like a crowd panicking situation and more dangerous than staying put in all but the biggest tsunami. So we took to easing the dock lines until we were sitting on the bottom, then controlling the boat as the water rose and fell back again. We never had more than 10 feet or so of rise and that may be all that area could have, seeing as how deep it is close to shore. But with a long shallow bottom, the same wave could be 30 feet or more.
One day there will be a tsunami of something over a hundred meters high that will hit the West Indies and America's east coast when a section of an island in the south Atlantic falls into the ocean, scientists say.
Boy, I sure hope my Rocna holds, lol.

"I feel the earth move under my feet"

As a California boy, born and bred, earthquakes are nothing new to me, but they are definitely a minor reason I did not resume my life there, after my circumnavigation.
Taking a few minutes to stretch out my back on my bunk yesterday about 4 PM, I felt what I first thought was a squall whipping the roller furled jib around. You know, that motion you get when the headstay is a bit loose and the furled jib kinda wobbles as the wind hits it.
But the jib was in the sailmaker's for a tune-up, and I couldn't hear any wind. By the time these thoughts had passed, the whole rig was shaking violently and the bunk (it was actually the whole boat) was actually bouncing up and down.
I made my way up the companionway to an almost unbelievable sight. Boats behind us in the yard were literally hopping up and down a few inches, coming clear of their jack stands and the keels from the blocks. The tops of the big steel pilings for the slips were moving fore and aft nearly 4 feet! Had any boats been close to a piling I have absolutely no doubt that there would have been major damage. They were just whipping around like the end of a fishing pole when casting.
It lasted maybe 3 minutes and I'm sorry I didn't think to take a video, as it was one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced on a boat.
I've been through numerous earthquakes on boats before, but they were nearly imperceptible. I'm guessing that being tied to pilings in very shallow water may have been the difference.
This morning estimates range between 6.8 and 7.1 (later, 7.3) on the news. We had a few very light aftershocks during the night.
To the best of my knowledge, no boats in the yard fell over, but there was significant damage to the marina restaurant, see pic below. What's the saying, "Cruising is 99% sheer boredom and 1 % sheer terror"? Well, maybe not terror in this case, but certainly a rather unnerving experience.

I saw a video take from a casino parking building that showed the bottom of the Gulf [about 15' deep] as the Katrina wave came ashore. You could see about half mile of exposed bottom thru the rain.

The effects of that 40' high wave pushed the houses near the beach up against the railroad elevated road bed. Just like that Wave in Brian's Post#12 . All crunched in a tall pile, while my office just down the street looked pressure washed.

The 2x4 in the front is where my desk was. Yes that is an iMac from my assistants desk in the center.
The screen area was full of clean sand. My office was 1000' from the beach at an elevation of 18'.
Water waves move with tremendous forces.
Jim...

PS: The railroad track was ≈2500' toward the Water tower.

That was hard to watch.
