I have recently installed a charging circuit on my Tohatsu 8 HP. When the motor is running, the depth sounder gives widely varying readings, some of which appear accurate. With engine off, sounder acts very accurately. How do I filter out the noise from the charging current??

This type of interference can be hard to trap. Most charging systems for a small motor are just magnetos. First I do not know why you needed to install this charge system, did the motor already have one? second are the cables to the battery tight and clean. the battery acts as a sponge and can adsorb some of this interference, but it the cables are attached directly to the house system then this energy by passes the battery. an trap which is a coil wire around a core might help. look for a trap sold for radios to pick out this radio freq interference. do you use two batteries. http://www.sacskyranch.com/altnoise.htmcheck this link it explains some of what I am trying to say. hope this helps :dance:
There should be a "ground" stud on the depth finder. It needs to have a wire go to you boat's grounding system, not the negative on your electrical system.

If it doesn't, you may need to get an isolation transformer, which are easily and cheaply available at auto parts stores and made for car electronics. Just follow the instructions as for a car installation.

Is that the same thing as a "noise suppressor"? Back when cars were simple that's the little device that was attached to the generator so you could listen to your AM radio.

Keep in mind two things about outboard charging systems. They only put out the maximum rated current at full throttle. The rest of the time it is quite a bit lower. Usually they aren't run long enough to put out an appreciable amount of amps. It may help charge your battery somewhat but usually not a great deal.

Thanks. The boat has only one battery and no grounding system. Will investigate the isolation transformer!

The motor did not come with a charging arrangement. I had it added. The motor is not electric start and system has only one battery. Also have solar panel in the charging circuit, connected directly to battery terminals. Engine voltage output goes through a switch of the 1-2-both type.
