Wow! NOAA Charts in PNG format

Hey All

I stumbled upon this website today. It has NOAA charts in PNG format. If you have a poster sized printer (or a Kinko's nearby) you can get NOAA charts for a LOT less than normal.

Seen it before but thats a GREAT link...

But note, West Marine will charge 12-20 bucks for huge (waterproof) chart. If you try and print that at the same size at Kinko's, at least twice as much.

But if you got a large format printer at home, you're golden.

They're great for planning but no so much on the trip. A little spray and you're sailing in uncharted waters.

NOAA also offers Booklet Charts free for the download. It breaks the standard chart into Letter sized pages for inclusion into a binder. I put mine in plastic covers with the seams pointing down and taped shut. They're nice for the small boats and pocket cruisers that don't have the benefit of a nav station. This is Casco Bay.

For planning, I still use my $19.99 waterproof Cabela's special.

Yeah! I really like those booklet charts. I do the same as you and I like to keep a copy up in the cockpit so I can reference it regularly.

Love the booklet charts. I've used them from Texas to the Chesapeake.

A tip- print every other page, then turn the paper over and print the skipped pages on the back. Then the pages in the book open facing each other.

Sometimes you must sorta "rearrange" pages a bit, because parts of the chart just aren't needed in the order they have them set up.

I did what TSBB recommends for a book of the Great Lakes. It's Not legal as far as the requirement to have charts on board but better than nothing. (I have an android tablet for a chart plotter.) I found a paper chart supplier at the Toronto boat show that is somewhat reasonable in his pricing. So I ordered a few "legal" charts.
