Moved from Michigan to Virginia, left all my winter stuff at my place in Michigan including my snow shovel....
These people down here start wearing about 3 layers of goose down when the temperature hits 50F. If the weather man forecasts a tenth of an inch of snow everybody panics and stocks up on bottled water, bread , and toilet paper. Nobody here has any clue as to how to drive in snow. They think the signs "Watch for Ice on Bridge" literally mean stop and look at the road surface before proceeding. If the wheels start slipping, give it more gas...

Wait until you have lived here a while. I grew up in Chicago and moved to VA. I had the same impression of Virginia regarding snow until I had to commute to work in the mountains. The big difference is the hills, and how the roads are often banked the wrong way. Even a little ice and forget driving. And would you want a school bus to try a mountain pass with your kid on board. I know it seems crazy to close everything for a half inch of snow but... I've lived through a few ice storms and on the 5th day without power or an ability to get to the store... the bottled water is a life saver. Many of us country folk have wells (electric) so when the power goes out, we don't have any water either.

Rgranger,
I don' t disagree with anything you stated. You are right.

Its just that I grew up in West Michigan, which is famous for copious amounts of Lake effect snow. I am probably too old to remember whether we had schools closed for anything less than a full scale blizzard. The place where I worked for 37 years was only closed for snow or ice on two occasions for a day. I lived in the country, and know the well issue. However, we were very fortunate never to have had a power outage of any significance. Worst problem would be no heat. I guess one learned to live in those colder areas and owned out of necessity such things as four wheel drive vehicles and snow blowers, and learned from youth how to drive in that crap.

That's also why I now winter in Virginia. Incidentally, I have a tee time tomorrow morning, Its going to get up to 50F (a January heat wave).

Pansies all! It was 7 below on Thursday and I fussed about putting a fleece on! 15 degrees warmer and I'll shovel in a t-shirt. No, really.

Your neighbor is not alone!
Do you operate the snow blower with a Painkiller in one hand?

We've met the couple a few slips down that are from Norway and sail the North Sea. I sat with my mouth open as they used our laptop to show us life above the circle. I sail in the shadow of their greatness.
