How Should My Traveler be Run...?

I have a tiller boat, usually sit mid cockpit and can pretty well reach the bridge deck with my armspan....

But with the messed up rigging (and lack of knowledge) I really didn't "play" with the traveler last year...either left it centered and dumped with the main.... or set it to one side ala "vang helper" on a downwind run not knowing if it was helpfull or not...

So I think I'll leave the lines long and seperate for know and get a feeel for sailing with it... and then maybe switch to single line at a length that "feels right" if that seems appropriate...

Sounds like a good plan to me. It can be a good performance tool but for us it mainly helps with less heeling under some conditions and Ruth appreciates that,

I removed a trim board to gain access to the washers and nuts that held my bridgedeck-mounted track. I'd be suprised if you don't have access to the underside, but it may be very difficult. In my case, there were individual holes cut in the liner and the holes were too small for me to fit my fingers to hold a nut in place. I used a little bit of butyl tape to stick each nut at the end of the machine screw until I could get a socket wrench in place to tighten it from the underside. It required another pair of hands from Sue. Getting each machine screw fastened in place was a long tedious process. IIRC, when removing, the washers and nuts generally stuck in place until I pushed a screw back in, which dislodged them.

It sounds like you are already past that step (reinstalling the track).

Yeah she's tight in there...All the nuts seemed to hold their position on reinstallation...

Before I started I crawled and squirmed around under the cockpit and behind the inner liner....You can almost see where the nuts "should be" (edge of bottom of track slot) but the back of the inner liner drops right there and would require major surgery to get behind cabinets under the companionway "if" that would give me access would still be questionable....

I'm glad I lucked out getting it apart, and did a an extra fine job of feathering the holes and rebedding with butyl so I don't have to chance it again (at least for another 30 years)...
