Good day folks. another technical question for you DIY'ers. I have a Hunter 42 Passage with those large lexan "windows" into which there is placed a Gray port. The sealed area between the port and the lexan does not leak. The seal between the fiberglass and the lexan is leaking. The boat is a '92 so I count my lucky stars this is the first leak of the kind.

I have read the other threads and do not see one that relates to this type of leak. I have made an attempt to caulk the space around the lexan which originally was installed as black caulk. This seems to have dried and pulled away from the fiberglass to a degree, not major though. My question is do I simply remove all remnants of old caulk and replace the caulk with Boatlife Life Seal or Dow 795 OR do I remove the entire lexan and reinstall with sealant inside? If that is the recommendation does anyone know if there are actually factory installed screws at the corners and midway on the laxan or are those only used until the sealand dries and then screws removed and filled with sealant???

If I remove and reinstall, and since the existing lexan is "crazed" does anyone have an idea of cost to replace the whole fixed lexan, reusing the port??

Thanks folks! Youhelp more than you know. and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We had a similar leak on our HV'36. I dug out all of the old material (did NOT remove the window). I cleaned it out the best I could and recaulked it with DOW795. It has NOT leaked since.

If you want someone to replace the crazed acrylic you can contact Marco Drovandi at 949-290-1069. His email address is boatwindows@att.net He is located in So. Cal.

Wow, that is good news Steve. so the DOW 795 is good stuff hey? And I don't need to spend the $ on new acrylic if I do'nt have to remove it and reinstall. recaulk sounds like an ofternoon work on a nice day. Thanks again.

Ditto Steve. Had the same issue with my Vision 32. Did as he suggests. No problem arose for another five years when I sold it.

BTW, I used Marco for my ports replacement. Professional and thorough.

Thanks Rick. Did you also use Dow 795? Does that stuff expand slightly when it cures so it seals all the little areas? Sandy

Sandy:

Be sure that you mask off the area. The stuff is very sticky.

It does appear to swell up just a little. Once it skins over you can remove the masking (GIVE IT SEVERAL HOURS).
