Cannot find recessed cockpit storage boxes.

My 1979 Hunter has a recessed pocket in the cockppit on starboard. It is about 18"L by 5"H and 5 or 6" deep. It has a lip around the entire circumference with screws. The bottom edge has a piece of teak to keep things in the storage pocket. When removed it provides access to the bottom of the primary winch and a cleat. I would like to buy a replacement of same size or slightly larger and also duplicate on other side. But I cannot locate a manufacturer.

I do find something similar for installing radios in the cockpit. But they are too deep to install in a coaming. Anyone seen a shallow one?

Ed - sure wish I had one of those on my 81. What is wrong with the one you have? Is it fiberglass? If so, we could likely refurbish it or use it for a mold to produce a few of them. Shouldn't be too hard to make a mirror image for the other side.
I don't recall this being in the data base. Was it a PO mod?

google "coaming box or compartment" ........ Ted's example is what you're looking for. They were popular owner additions to boats built without them. In the old catalina 27 parts sheet you'll find them listed for about $45 a piece, with teak trim..... ha, ha.... I'd call the factory and see if they still had any. They'll fit on any boat.

Thanks Ted, exactly what I want. Never thought to use "coaming" in my Google search. Would be nice to find them a little less costly so I'll begin that search. Pretty sure it was an owner addition. Our older H37s did not have the engine gauges on the port coaming like later models. So there is space for one there also. And since I want to remove the winches and cleats a hole there will be ideal. I plan to replace the winch pads with plastic teak. . . . . maybe.

Ed, I thought I'd run across some others recently online but can't find them now. I think it would be very environmentally sensitive to substitute a manmade material for a rare tropical wood, especially if it reduces sanding and varnishing.:dance:

I have been searching for years for fiberglass recessed compartment to fit the three gallon tank for my outboard to keep it stowed out of the cockpit. Haven't had any luck. Any ideas. Thanks....

I think you could build this out of Trex. I would look great, never need sanding etc.
