Sitting here next to an open window, on the lee side of the house, and I am stunned we still have power. I suppose being on the same feed as an active US Senator helps..? Some of the gusts sound like a freight train and two of them literally shook the house. My cedar fence in the back yard has blown over and I suspect I have more leaves in the yard than I did yesterday..

On the way home from the marina a HUGE white pine tree fell across the road onto the car in front of me. The car was covered in power lines and the owner too afraid to even touch the door for fear of being electrocuted. I called the police and they were there quickly...

Earlier I was down at Dimillo's Marina and it was a ROUGH SCENE... Spent some time helping to adjust lines. Sadly, I am certain some of the boats floating when I left will be submerged come morning.

Our boat and Tim R's boat are weathering the storm just fine. We are moored up in a little hurricane hole called the Harraseeket River in So. Freeport, ME. Our boat is way up at the head of the river as far up as the moorings go just off that point of land on the left where the boats end. Tim R's boat is about 1/8 mile down stream. At 40-45 knots there was a 6" chop, that's it.. The mooring ball was not even sucked under.

As a volunteer firefighter, I took a class with the local power company. Very eye opening.

Most residential powerlines are carrying over 7,200 volts to the transformers. If you see a car with lines on it, or lines down on the road, do not go near it. Even if there are people inside a car, or lines laying on someone, you will most likely be killed if you get near it, adding to the disaster.

If your in a car, as long as its not on fire, your safe because the car forms a crude Faraday cage around you. Your protected. If you open your door and step onto the ground, or even get your foot out the door, you may get your feet blown off/and or electrocuted/killed.

If your cars on fire and you feel your life is really in danger, you have to ground yourself to the car by touching metal before you open the door and before you start putting your feet down. Put both feet down at the same time keeping them tight together. Make sure both feet are on the ground before you let go of the car with your hands. If your still alive, hop. Hop on your feet, both feet leaving the ground, and landing, together, at the same time, keeping your feet tightly together.

Hop out of the electrical field as far as you can. The problem is when you walk, you pick one foot up and step out of the field to ground, and blammo, your toast. Both feet have to remain in the field, or leave the field, together.

For any victims, your only option is to wait for a power crew. Walking in to save them is only going to get you killed. The victims might survive, or not, but it wont be from anything you do.

Well I am here on the Chesapeake in Herring Bay glad to have my recent butyl arrive. Deck work just before Sandy. We are live aboard, sitting out on shore at marina apartment power is out with 60 plus and gust higher. Lots of boats unattended to by owner. Canvas tearing. Headsails not removed. Also many not secure
Very strange storm, at 3 pm we had ice pellets that built up. The winds are clocking and temp is bitter.
Cannot see our boat now in the dark out on the tee with two others. Earlier we watched her dancing and swaying in 50 plus. Hundreds of gulls were sitting on the water riding the waves and pointing into the wind. Can't wait till light to see how Evening Star is. Good luck to all.

THere are always a few yahoos in every marina that leave their crap up during a bad storm. Then they wonder why it got torn. Not to mention that they are endangering the boats around them because their stuff can blow off and damage someone else's stuff.

It is a responsibility of any owner of a boat to secure their boat and prep it for a storm. It is inconsiderate not to!

Anyone near Solomon's?

Just wondering if anyone is holed up near Solomon's and how it looks out there.. our boat is at Zahnisers, and we are 2.5 hours away, wondering if our storm preps are holding. It is always a little scary to double up on dock lines, leaving enough line for tide but not too much, wondering how big the surge will be.
And to think... I thought I was silly prepping for a storm that was going to peter out before landfall.

Some do it on purpose hoping to cash in an upgrade through an insurance claim. The day the insurance companies insist on a shared responsibility between them and the boat owners about named storm preparations then things might improve. Currently, they take the easy road, pay the claims and raise all our rates.

Nope, but dumb luck helps a lot! The people just down Route 88 in Falmouth Foreside and about 80,000 other people are not so furtunate.

Glad you guys found moorings in the Harraseeket -- good time of year for that.

I'm in Herring Bay (at Shipwright) and moved our boat to a different slip for this hurricane because my neighbor doesn't seem to do any prep for storms. For Irene last year he left all canvas up and had thin, beat docklines with no extras. This year he has a hard dinghy on deck which I was afraid would become a large flying dinghy. So I moved. We'll see how I fare after the south winds have their way with the tide today.

The report from the marina this morning is that all boats faired well with no losses. Very surprising considering the state last night. According to my research, we were there during the worst of it.

My boat is at Calvert Marina, just across the creek for Zahniser's. Things look pretty good. Wish my neighbors had done a better job of securing their boats. The next high tide is about 1400 today - should be okay.

We didn't even loose power and no water in the basement. Probably because I prepared for it. Flash light, propane stove, water in the bathtub: the works.

I'm glad for the rest of you, those on the water. We were out sailing on Sunday. The winds were freshening as we got to the jetty, up from about 16 knots, I think. It was fun but would have gone to frightening in 24 hours. I just got back from the sea wall at Wells. Talk about frightening. Out past the breakers I think the swells were . . . swell, but get in close where the breakers start and it was, is, a nightmare. At any rate, a pendulous end to a great sailing season.

We're at Calverts also. I readjusted fenders and checked the lines. Everything faired well and at 1200 the water was still below the docks. Only minimal drips inside from wind driven rain and condensation. Our friends are doing well also, more later.

Is it still blowing up there? It looks like it from the radar. I've been watching bands of showers hit the Maine coast from the Southeast.

No it stopped around 7:00 am.. I did sleep with the window open just to listen to it... A couple of times I got pretty wet so had to close the window but kept re-opening cause it sounded so great..


Boat is fine, not so much as a scratch.. Wish I could say the same for my fence.....
