West marine has a store in my town. I went down there hoping they would have the supplies
in stock Not only did they have nothing in stock They wanted substantially more for every item than defender Industries for mail order. I ordered over the phone from Defender Stuff arrived the next day. There was a time when West had most items in stock. Not any more. I see no benifit in us West marine

Match

Ask them to match the internet price which I have 2 WM local and they do match some prices but they did change things lately.
Amazon is one which they will match and I found a blue seas circuit breaker 40 amp for $34.00 and they did match the price with theirs was $59.00.

Excuse me Phil for this one, as I might make the War Room.
But I hate West Marine, and everything they stand for. While Steven will sell anything you need online, (Defender), and the GALL of these people to price match it makes me physically sick. I would not buy a plug out of this store if it were the only one in town, and my boat was sinking. It's little more than a Yuppie clothing store, and the help there knows no more about a sailing vessel than my neighbor. While there is no need to go into specifics, these clowns have undone me for the last time.

When I walk in the front door, and a 22 year old girl asks me, "Can I help you", my reply when I used to go there was, "No, I really sort of doubt it".

Sorry folks. I feel better now..

Both stores in my area have knowledgable and helpful staff. Not the cheapest and sometimes out of stock on what I need but far from the clothing outlet you describe.

Having said that, online suppliers are my prime source of parts.

Our local WM store is handy for parts you might need right now and are desperate enough to pay their price. They have 1 part time employee (cruiser) that is knowledgable and helpful, 1 early 20 something kid that KNOWS EVERYTHING 'cause daddy has a sailboat and a couple more that would probably be more helpful in the local grocery.
I was in the Merritt Island store one day and had to explain to the dummy at the counter what portlights are, what silicon is used for and how the 2 go together. They did have quite the selection of pretty clothes.......

Price

I do shop for the best price for good quality equipment and do think West Marine in my area are very helpful and most times are real boaters and very helpful and when I lived in NY they also were most times boaters and very helpful.
I have 2 WM in my area one is very good for sailboat hardware and the other one is good ffor fishing and power boats, when visiting WM in Marathon that store had so much more equipment for sailboats.
The stores up in NY had so much more sailboat equipment than here in my area and so they carry more of what they sell more of and will order it for you pretty fast, but I do shop around for best price.
If they don't know the answer they will get some one that does.I do also like supporting my local stores and help keep them in business other wise if I need it yesterday they can help me.

Yup, it's that time of year for the annual WM rant. We've heard it all before folks except for the guy who responds to the ubiquitous "Can I help you" with "I doubt it".

It's no wonder...

It is what it is and all store are not the same. We have more important issues with which everyone should be concerned.

Personally, I have no interest in the company or the brands but I do wish people would keep discussions constructive here or go to any of the other sailing web sites more attuned to complaining for no useful purpose.

Yes, yes. Ban all objectionable literature. Don't just not read it, complain about it vociferously.

When I bought my boat five years ago everyone on this site recommended Defender Marine.

I blame each and every of of you for the fact I now know everyone at Defender by thier first name.

I plan a spring vacation to CT each year just so I can go to Defender's "spring" sale and purchase a years worth of project parts

Next day delivery works also for me.

On the other hand...I support West Marine...every time they send me a coupon and when what I need is on sale.

For what you need go to a local body shop supply store, any fiberglass repair west has they will have and cheaper. If they don,t have what u need I have had great success with Jamestown Distributors, I used them when I was virtually changing everything. If you are going to need a lot of boat goods it pays to join their I think its called gold club, for like 35$ free shipping for a year on anything u buy. Also when I needed something, and I ordered it say wed morning most times it would be on my porch thur afternoon fri latest. I have no affiliation with them I just buy a lot of stuff from them... Just thought I'd remind folks that the site hosting this very forum has a chandlery.
