Just bought an '84 222 in late Sept. Cabin was reworked by one of previous owners. What pics I have seen of the 222's, some have a compression post attached to the cabin bulkhead. Shouldn't all of the 222's have this post? If this is the case, where can I get a replacement part, or do I have to manufacture one myself? Sorry for any inaccurate terminology here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're not alone. I've talked to few guys with 84 O'Day 222s with no compression post. All I can tell you is that they installed them on the 86s including mine. I think that all the O'Day 222s should have this tension bar. Unfortunately nobody has them. You're going to need to make your own or have a metal fabricator build one for you. It's just a 1" stainless steel pipe with a flat flange on one end and the other end is flattened out a few inches with two holes for bolts. The flange also has two holes for the tabernacle bolts.
What you could do is mock up something out of wood for instance, in order to get the proper angle of the flange in relation to where the pipe will bolt on to the square post at the corner of the galley cabinet.
Then you can have something made up out of steel pipe with the same angle.
The angle of my sketch should be pretty close to the actual angle of the flange.
Take note that my boat came through originally with a different tabernacle than what I now have. The bolt spacing on my stainless steel hinge is wider than the ones on my cast Aluminum tabernacle. I had to use two of the original bolts for the tension bar.
My mast is Z-Diffusion or Z-Spar. If your mast is Dwyer or anything other than Z-Spar, you're going to need to design the flange for the spacing of two of the outside bolts. Good Luck!
Joe

Is it possible that the 222 was designed with a reinforced cabin roof? Hey Rudy.....

Does the same condition exist in O'Day 25's ?

Is this post located directly under the mast tabernacle? If so, I would change it out and go with the bar.

Rich,
My cabin roof seems to be pretty solid when I stand on it. I have no idea why the O'Day company didn't install these tension bars in the 84s or why they thought it was necessary to install them in the later models. I remember talking to Rudy about this very thing several years ago and he didn't seem to have an answer for it either. He had a lot of calls for these tension bars and he asked me to get some measurements of my post which I did, but he never had any of these bars made up.

The problems that you can encounter in making up these bars has a lot to do with bolt spacing on the welded flange end where it bolts to the tabernacle. O'Day used about four different spar manufacturers and all the tabernacles were different. My original mast tabernacle was a cheap cast Aluminum extrusion with a sheave built into it for the Jib Halyard. These extrusions were imported from France and assembled in the states namely Z-Defusion in Bristol RI. Others were mfg by Dwyer and other companies and had stainless steel hinge plates.
I can see why Rudy didn't want to get involved in making up these bars. It's too cost prohibitive.
I've talked to three different 84 O'Day 222 owners who have made up their own bars or had them made up for their boats. One guy wasn't sure of the flange angle so he had a flange made up that could pivot on a bolt and this worked for him. It's really not rocket science.

It's possible that the pressure of the mast bearing down on the cabin top of the 84 OD 222s over a period of time, was causing the roof to sag and the stays to go slack. Why else would they start installing these bars in the 1986s and later models? My analysis is purely conjecture. I really don't know.

The problem is that the mast step plate on the 222 is forward of the wooden compression post. That is not the case on the 25. My former 1985 222 didn't come with the tension bar. I noticed it in one of Joe's posts and after figuring out why it might be needed, I took Joe's measurements and had one made. After I installed it, I noticed that my turnbuckles didn't need to be tightened as far as before (about 1/4 inch less), indicating that the deck was flexing a little without the bar. It's an easy fix after you get the bar fabricated. I had mine bolted onto the bottom of the mast-step plate (see photo in my photo album: http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/album.php?albumid=2157&pictureid=13860)

Good luck.

The 1980 Oday 25 compression post is a 2x4 mounted to the edge of the port bulkhead.
That boat is beautiful inside Ward! I think you've found a boat that you can stick with for many years.

Dave,
I didn't realize that your spars are a different make than mine. Dwyer right? I'm looking at what appears to be your boom laying on the V birth in the pic.

The bolt spacing on your 222 is probably wider than what was on my tabernacle. This is probably why Rudy didn't was to get involved in having these bars made up.
You did an excellent job with that bar.

I remember talking to a guy down South a few years ago who was desperately looking for an O'Day 222. He wound up traveling up to a Northern state to check out an 84 OD 222 that wasn't in great condition. He noticed that this boat didn't have a tension bar and that the owner had instead mounted a wood post straight up from the floor to the bottom of the tabernacle. Needless to say, this guy quickly passed this boat up. I think I would have passed it up too.
Thanks for chiming in on this thread Dave. I really appreciate it.

Rich, Joe,
That cabin photo is indicative of the entire boat. I found people who knew the original owner and they told me he owned it from day one, until this past spring when owner had to stop sailing due to age. A young Coastie bought it, cleaned it well, splashed it in July, then decided he did not like sailing.
Some rigging needs to be updated but due to age, not wear or abuse. We got very lucky finding this Oday.

I agree with you Ward. You really lucked out in finding that boat.

One of my friends owns a beautiful 36' Pan Oceanic cutter that he bought new many years ago. He loves the boat but due to some health issues he has decided to down size to an O'Day 25. I told him I'd keep my eyes open for one.
