Drop your main, jib alone will be a much safer ride. Otherwise, continue to have fun, we know how hard that'll be for you! 
Correction On Choice Of Only One Sail
Jib alone would be a better choice going downwind.

If you are heading down the bay a North West wind is at your stern.

Yes indeed, NW 'BLOW' on the Chesapeake ....
Stay close to the Western shore to avoid the fetch and enjoy the 'flatwater'; but, keep a constant look out for the damn fish traps and enjoy (ear to ear grin) the flat water with constant big flow of NW'erlies. Like riding steel rails .... 'cept for the mouth of the Mobjack and the entrance to the York River.
Sailing doesnt get any better than this (anywhere) ... a constant 20-25kts from the NW, full up sails, tide at your aft quarter and 'flat water'!!!! ya wait all year for these days.

We got teeth rattled the whole way down, took 10hrs from Reedville to Hampton. Anchored down next I64. Beautiful night.RichH said:

We did South River to the Solomons yesterday with a Yankee out and did 6 knots. We're glad to be traveling with a group that's done it before. We'll have to go outside the ICW so it should be interesting when we get further along.

We just put in at Charleston yesterday afternoon. Went outside from the Cape Fear. Even on an Island Packet 38', it was very rough. Forecast missed it, and we beat all the way, 30 hours. I wouldn't wish that trip on anyone. An I.P. 40 was going to ghost us, and they turned back to the approaches, and we heard through the grapevine they started down on the inside.

Sitting in Beaufort, NC, currently. Looks like we have a weather window to head outside Saturday for either Wrightsville Beach or Charleston. Will know on Friday... Would leave on Friday but Joan has other ideas...
