I pulled our Hunter 22 ten days ago and tonight I have a fire in the wood stove. Such is life in Maine. My question is how do other Hunter 22 owners empty the water tank on their boat? I know how I do it, but was hoping some one out there has an easier way.

Thanx in advance

Gary, water gets very hard here but I just pump the tank until the pump loses suction. There is a little left in the tank but nothing that will damage anything. Never had an issue with damage to the tank. I do not recommend that you put any antifreeze in them though.

last year I pulled the pump line and used a shop vac. Not the neatest way but it works. This year I didn't fill it up all the way less mess shop vac still looks like the best way.

I bought a 120 VAC water pump. The kind that is normally used in pressure water systems, so it is available in 12 VDC as well. I disconnect the feed to the galley sink hand pump and slip the pump input hose over this feed line.

It takes about 5 minutes to pump the fresh water overboard. Saves wear on the hand pump.

I like to keep my fresh water tank full to press the bow down and improve pointing. I tried RV fresh water antifreeze, but it took many flushes of the tank to get the taste out. Wasn't worth it.

Water tank

Thanx for your replys to my question about emptying the water tank in the H22. I too pull the feed to the hand pump. Then I attach a hose - which has an in line water pump - to the line. Then I use my portable electric drill to pump out the water which I discharge into the sink. Similar process as to several of your suggestions. I too only use the water tank for ballast.

Thanx again.

I run the tank dry with the pump than dump a half gallon of Tidewater vodka ($9) into the tank as antifreeze. Run the pump again to get the 'Vodka' into the lines. I'm not the only one, my local liquor store goes through a lot of rotgut vodka in the fall :)

Mmmmh! Tidewater Vodka! Sounds delicious!

I'm not partial to the brand but I also use the cheapest 1.75 L bottle of wodka as anti-freeze for our fresh water tank. I'd bet that the last bottle I bought cost me about $12 up here in NY state.
