So I've got this $10,000 check from FEMA. I want to use it buy a new(er) sailboat, but the Admiral insists we use it to put sheetrock on the walls of our house. I'm wondering if I should take a stand on this or not. :naughty: Thoughts?

Should use it for what it was intended for and nothing less... Wasn't that a federal loan or is it a gift?

when you get home from a nice weekend on your boat you will have wished you had spent the money on fixing up your damaged home....

Lessee, sheetrock or boat. Sheetrock or boat...I'm assuming (!) your house was damaged during the recent flooding of that area.

FEMA sent the check in the expectation that you'd fix up the damage, and remain in the area to contribute to the economy of NO, and by extension, the country.

Your present boat is still operational?

My advice would be; If you still care about NO, and by extension, the country, tear up the check and fix the house on your own dime.

This is almost a topic for the war room, huh?

You might as well ask a room full of drunks if you should have another!

Do both! A nicely preserved mid 80's boat in the 23' range will go for around $6k. Use 4 more to sheetrock. Done

It really sounds like the subliminal choice is: new sheetrock ... or ... new boat/new wife.

Tell ya what, Ken. I'll help you put the sheetrock up, and I get unlimited usage of the new boat you buy with the FEMA money you save on the cheap (my) labor.

New wife costs a lot more than $10,000 !! (after tax/title/license)..

I am in the "both" camp.. Ya can probably find some folks to do the drywall job for less dollars .. then use the rest for the 25 foot one that has been eating at ya!

Really?

We lost over $350K on our home due to the housing crisis, created by the banks stealing OUR money. So Uncle hands them $300 Billion to blow leaving us holding the bag. Wheres our check? Wheres our bailout money? No, we can pound sand while people with zero damage to their home, living in a hurricane zone, get free checks in the mail to blow my tax dollars on a boat. What a country to be proud of.

In my Humble opinion, The "housing" market failed because a whole lot of people bought things that were extremely overpriced with money lent to them by greedy financial folks who made money by selling the risk to someone else who didn't have the expertise to realize that the loans could not be paid by the original purchaser.. Note that the Purchaser is at the start and the end of this problem.. First is that the purchaser should have the sense to understand what is overpriced.. and that same purchaser should have the sense to not buy what he can't afford.. Now.. Off to the war room !!

That's more like it. Claude, interesting about home prices vs. the law of supply and demand. Too many houses built should LOWER the prices, no?

And, of course, the "banksters" are in no hurry to help folks out by refinancing at lower interest rates. Typical unbridled capitalism: kill the customers.

I think, if it were truly "unbridled", the bailouts wouldn't have happened.

+1

When I bought my first house in '97, the bank said I was pre-approved for a $250,000 house based on my salary. That would have left nothing left for expenses, car, food, etc. I bought a house for $125k. Why? Because I was smart about it. I sold my house for a profit. Not more money but an actual profit. I was literally paid to live there. I now live debt free.

To the War Room!

way too serious...

Ha. First of all, although the check says FEMA, it's an advance on my flood policy, which I have paid into nearly $25,000 over the past 20 years.

Secondly, do you really think my wife would let me buy a sailboat when her walls don't have sheetrock? :D

Thirdly, since I have a job and pay taxes, I don't qualify for anything the government hands out, even though I'm the reason they have stuff to hand out. Sure, I can take out a low interest SBA loan for any shortfalls, but I have to pay that back.

You would not believe the number (and caliber) of people that lineup whenever they are giving away free stuff.

Ah, yes. Mandatory flood insurance, another subject destined for the war room!

True that on the number and caliber of folks who'll line up for a freebie.
I myself went to Denny's when they had that free breakfast promotion a few years back. Not that I'm of any great caliber, of course.
