I would definitely go with a CDI FF-2 Roller Furler without the ball bearings on the drum. If you had a larger boat you'd probably need the ball bearings for a larger Genoa that they carry, but for boats like ours, the drum can spin on the washer provided and you'll never have to worry about ball bearings freezing up and causing your forestay to break.

If your 222 has a Z-Spar mast with internal halyards, it probably has stays with T-Bar fittings that fit into slots on the mast. A fore stay T-Bar fitting in a mast slot will break with a CDI Roller Furler. You will need to buy a stainless steel mast tang and install it on your mast. Then you will need to have toggle fittings installed at both end of your fore stay.

The vinyl luff that comes with the furler, fits right over your fore stay and when the sail is working, there is a tremendous amount of forward and backward as well as side to side movement of your forestay. Toggle fittings are designed to move in these directions whereas, T-Bar fittings aren't and this is why you would need a tang at the top of your mast in the general vicinity of the mast slot. If you have a Dwyer mast, it probably has external halyards and tangs on the mast. In which case, you can disregard this.

If you ever plan on buying an anchor roller for your bow, you may want to do it now. I'm glad that I bought my anchor roller first because I was able to mount my furler drum on a 5" tang connected to my bow stem chainplate. This gave me more clearance under the drum for working my anchor. It's just something to think about.

Another thing you may want to consider is the length of the drum control line. I never did but I was able to move the cleat for the control line near my stern rail where it's readily accessible at the helm. I could use about 5' more of that Dacron braid line, but what I have seems to be just enough to make my system work.

I never liked that furler drum control line cleat on the Starboard side of my cabin and I removed it years ago. I also removed those two nylon fair leads for the line that were on the deck. I use single sheaves at the base of my lifeline rails and this works out great for me.

I've been through the school of hard knocks when it comes to what is really needed on my 1986 O'Day 222 and I feel that I should pass it on.

I used a 5/16" marine eye fitting in place of a toggle fitting which is shown in the third pic. It is made up of a regular rigging pin and a toggle strap and it works equally as well as a swaged toggle fitting. A friend of mine came up with this idea and I ran by Rudy of D&R Marine first before I adopted it. It just makes it easier to connect and disconnect my furler from the tang. It's kind of a Mickey Mouse thing, but it works.

The last pic shows the blue furling line. I'm using a nylon jam cleat which is similar to a horn cleat, but it's designed to lock the line in place with one wrap. I had to mount a 4" Beckson deck plate inside my fuel locker in order to gain access to the bolts for this cleat. Actually, I can also get at my stern cleat now through this opening if I ever have a need to.

I love my Harken Traveler! What a difference in performance this makes on an O'Day 222.
Hey good luck!
Joe

You may also want to check out the smallest Schaefer roller furler. Comes with a plastic foil and you can use your existing halyard. Installed one on my previous Sonar in one morning. Fit right over my existing headstay. Ernie
