Does anyone know of a freeware or reasonably priced *.bsb converter/reader that will work on a PC.

(For reading Nautical Charts off of the NOAA site).

I did a google and found a few "free BSB readers" but when I down loaded I got a virus on my computer. :naughty:

I've been using Open CPN on board with a pc for about a year now. It's fairly easy to download the NOAA charts,,, go to their help file for instructions. Works great.

With Sea Clear, you also have the option of buying their disc for $20 which includes ALL the charts. Saves time downloading. Sea Clear also sells the BU-535 (?) USB GPS dongle. A good package deal.

Stu,

I used Sea Clear for a year or so. But dropped it after testing OpenCPN.
Sea Clear is very old and not being updated. Also, using it far afield I found a few things I did not like. Like you can not plot a course across the international date line. And a few other.

Yup, there is always individual preference for use of different software. Your boat, your choice.

I haven't used Sea Clear on the water, just bought it for the charts. Already had the dongle.

Just pointing out options to readers.

Alright!

I'm going to give that a try and let you know.

Thanks.

Open CPN seems like it will do nicely. Still learning what all the buttons do but it opened a chart of the lower Chesepeake Bay.

Thanks,
