A bay area sailor posted recently about a sailboat stolen out of Alameda CA. It is now believed that that person also kidnaped his 2 small children and may be sailing to Mexico. I'm not sure this is the proper forum but wanted to get this out to as many west coast sailors as possible.

PS the boat is a 2011 Hunter 41 named UNLEASHED

uuuuhhhh There was a time when my boat was ready to make such a trip.. for the same reasons.. fortunately, the lawyers came to a much more reasonable agreement!.

Man sounds like a hollywood movie plot. But honestly a sailboat is so slow, it shouldn't be that difficult for the marine police or C. Guard to catch up to them, if you can spot 'em that is.

I don't condone what is happening, BUT correct me if I am wrong. Once he is offshore 7 miles he is in international waters and the USCG would have NO business with him. OR does the US now board any boat on any waters any where in the world?

According to todays lectronic Latitude the missing boat was spotted about 30 miles west of Half Moon Bay CA by a fishing vessel. Just for clarification its not my boat.

Don't they shoot pirates in the Indian Ocean and other places that are more than 7 miles off our coast?

Clarification

My understanding is that the Coast Guard has the legal right to board any US flagged/registered boat, anywhere in the world. If you doubt this, come north through the Yucatan channel. You will get boarded.

The Coast Guard exerts its authority wherever and whenever it chooses. They have been patrolling in the Middle East for a decade now. Here is a link:

"I don't think a lot of people necessarily understand the unique nature of the Coast Guard and how we are both a military and a federal law enforcement agency," Thomas said in an interview with Fox News.

While in the Middle East, the Coast Guard operates under traditional military authorities and customary international law, which allows military personnel to visit, board and search vessels to confirm their identity, according to Papp.

Fox news here in the Bay area has reported that the boat is in custody and the kids are safe. They were about 30 miles west of Monterey.
