Question on Standard Horizon remote mic cable.

Hello all,
I recently installed a Standard Horizon GX-1700 to replace the original Raytheon unit on my Hunter 450 in the original location at the top of the companionway. I also purchased the Ram3 remote mic and was hoping to mount it on the pod at the helm. Unfortunately, with all of the cables already there, there is not room to run the remote mic cable without cutting and re splicing it, as it has fairly large plugs on both ends. Does anyone know if this is ok to do and how easy it would be as I can imagine that the wires are pretty small? I tried calling Standard Horizon but they dont open until 8am pacific time.

I do those type cables all the time for my ham radio mics. It's not fun but easily spliced if you have the patience and proper sized soldering iron.

Being a Dentist I do have a pair of high magnification loupes which should be helpful and a friend offered to let me borrow his small soldering iron.

Keep small children away as they might hear some colorful language (if you are anything like me) - all it takes is a steady hand.

Yeah, as Don says these are OK to cut and splice. Just work slowly and carefully.

Plan the splice location so that it will be out of the way and well supported. Strip back about 2 or 3 inches of the outer jacket so you have wire to work with. Get some skinny heatshrink tubing and slide a 3/4" piece on each wire before splicing and soldering it.

I'll Have to look at mine this evening, i'm thinking that it might be easier to take the connector off and solder it back on, that would be better than a splice. I think that the connector is removable, but I might be all wet it wouldn't be the first time, I'll look when I get home.

I was able to get everything completed, was easy compared to working in someones mouth.
