Remove or Light Sand Cetol

The teak toe rail had 3 coats of Cetol Natural applied 3 years ago. There are numerous spots that have nothing left (bare wood) and was wondering if I should sand the entire rail down to bare and reapply 3 fresh coats...or just sand the bare spots and do a touch up and try to blend the new Cetol to the old.

I was told when I last applied cetol that you could recoat as apposed to other types of sealers try to find closest color match and ask paint store

My experience is that if you have bare spots and they have some weathering....the spots will show unless you strip the entire product off..

The label says you can touch up, or apply a yearly maintenance coat with out major prep..... but I think that is contingent on no bare or discolored spots.

The key is to not wait three years next time..... just apply a maintenance coat every year, even if it still looks good... and that's a very easy task.... much better than stripping and sanding the whole thing.

Or you could just wait a few more years, and then almost all of the wood will be bare. That's what I've done with mine.

You might try masking off a section that includes the "show through" portion. Then sand down the windowed spot to wood and build up coats until it matches the surrounding wood. Finally unmask and apply one coat to the entire piece of wood. I like what Mark said....try it...

I have the same problem and am going to try to repair just the spots that have worn off. It might work and it is a lot easier than stripping off the entire coat of cetol. I can always strip it down.

I have done both. My stern seats had spots and I sanded all off and refinished. They look new. I had some small spots on a small piece of teak at the front of my companionway slide. I sanded the grey spots that were weathered to the wood until it looked like new wood. I did some spot applications to build those areas back to the approximate level of the old cetol. I then lightly sanded the old cetol and applied three coats. Looks new. If I were you, I'd try that first. Cetol seems pretty forgiving. Just use light coats each time.
