Fuel for alchol cooktop

Do I have to use the origio soot free fuel?? At wm they sell denatured alchol right next to the origio brand is it the same thing?? It is like half the price

I've used regular denatured alcohol from Lowes for years without any problem in our Origo oven and cooktop.

Yes, denatured alcohol works well. Got my last gal. can of it from Home Depot and then stored it by the fluxgate compass. Suggest you don't store a metal can there, lol.

I buy my methyl hydrate at Rona up here in the Great White North. I think it cost about $12 / 4 litre plastic jug.

Methyl Hydrate is used up here in Canada as gas line antifreeze. It also thins shellack.
Does it really work in the stove?

IIRC, ethanol (denatured alcohol) burns a little hotter (more BTU/lb)

Denatured Alcohol is simply ethanol with a wee bit of methanol added to make it 'poisonous'.
The use of the term methyl hydrate instead of wood ALCOHOL or methyl ALCOHOL is to lessen the chance of alcohol addicted persons from mistakenly drinking it and going blind or dying.

Ok so let me geet this strait, the two methol and ethol are pretty much the same. One is a bit hotter burning.

So what can I use in my old Coleman stove? It looks like this one. Just not as clean, and with a few scorch marks on the wind protector things...
