New owner, 1993 23.5, rookie question - my main sail does not have any battens, so what size should I get? It appears to be the original Doyle sail. An older discussion on this hunter owner's site gives the Batten lengths top to bottom: 36.5", 64", 88" and 104". However these appear to be a few inches too long when I measure the sail...is it intended that the battens extend past the edge of the sail?

IF there appears to be a pocket in the back end of the sail, then the batten should rest in that which was standard but look to see if the pocket has for better lack of terms a springy material that is in it as the length may be a little shorter to accomodate the pocket.

Width of material is 5/16 batten.

On the ends of the batten, make sure it is rounded and filed smooth so not to cut the batten pockets.

Thanks for the response, guys.

@Crazy Dave - 5/16 sounds too narrow (but I'm away from home for a few days, can't check until later in the week).

@Caverun - I used the link to Doyle, and got this reply (very prompt!):

Best way to tell is measure the actual pocket on the sail & add 3/8 " for proper tension
there's no way of knowing what Doyle loft built the sail that far back to be that accurate, it may have been Barbados 1 1/4" wide batten would be fine & proper length

Battens usually fit fairly tight into the pocket. You could simply buy stock sizes that are a bit long then cut them to length yourself. Sounds like you've got a fully battened main. The long length will be very expensive to ship so, I'd second the recommendation to contact Strictly Sail in Cincinnati and pick them up in person.

As Crazy Dave said, file the ends smooth and round the edges.

Another dumb batten question ... I was able to measure my batten pockets, 1-1/4 inches...but they are very thin, I could barely stick in a metal 1-1.4 inch ruler.
So...do I order 1-1/4 inch-wide battens -- is the fit supposed to be very tight, or should I order more narrow battens that would fit more easily? Also, the pocket seems tapered for a couple of inches at the mast-end (luff?).
