Hi All,

I am new to sailing and this website. I just bought a 1980 37ft Cherubini. Needs work but solid. I am replacing the engine with a Yanmar 3YM30 engine.

I need recommendations on a new prop, none with the boat

My boat came with a 15X13 Campbell Sailer. I was never happy with the motoring performance. I replaced it with a 16"Kiwi feathering prop. Fantastic. Motoring is up 1+mph, sailing in light air is much better. BTW I can let you have the Campbell cheap

Congrats on your "new" boat.

Campbell Sailor props do have an enthusiastic fan base. So give some thought to Bill's offer. Below is a cut-and-paste from another thread with more info. About Bill's prop, if interested, I am thinking you might want to touch base with the manufacturer and check that the size is right for your engine/boat. Bill mentions that his came with his boat. So it's possible that the PO just came by a size that fit, rather than having the size/pitch custom cut for the application.

"Just in case you want to know more about the Campbell Sailor Prop, Maine Sail (moderator and expert/professional contributor to the SBO forums) did an extensive review a few years ago with real world test results. Here is the link. Go to the opening post #1. I put one on my boat to replace a two-blade dumbo type. An improvement. Like it."

Got pictures? What is cheap?
My new engine has counter clockwise rotation as viewed from the stern.

Transmission output shaft, not engine rotation is what matters.
Ccounterclockwise requires a left hand prop I think. Mine is RH.

Previous advice to contact prop maker is sound. Engine HP, max rpm and transmission ratio are key factors in sizing prop. I like Kiwi better than Campbell, but they are about twice the cost of Campell.

This is what's on my 37 Cherubini. I ass-u-me it is original. I found these markings after cleaning the prop. Took pictures to keep on file. Maybe someone can tell me what they mean.

Your prop is a 16Rx14 Jose, 16" diameter, righthand, and 14" pitch. I believe "sailer" makes it a Campbell prop. On my original 2QM20 the 2-blade was 16" as was the replacement Flex-O-Fold 2-blade that I bought. Now with my new 3YM30 I have a Flex-O-Fold 3-blade. Now I am having another senior moment and will have to look up the dimensions. On both Flex-O-Folds I relied on the rep/owner for the size.

Found it: my 3-blade Flex-O-Fold is a 15R x 13 .

Hi Ed: The pic's don't show the full-on profile, but from what I can see, the prop doesn't look at all like my Campbell Sailor prop.

I think you are right Rardi. Especially since "sailer" is a misspelling.

José, I'm guessing that MWC stands for Michigan Wheel Company (I don't think they are a Chinese company :). Do you (did you) have a 2QM20 Yanmar? Because my 2-blade original with my 3QM30 is a 16R15 (1" bigger diameter). Something for MJ to consider if thinking of buying that prop...

For MJ:

Re the above about prop size and if you are considering the Campbell Sailor prop, just a head's up that the Campbell size/pitch doesn't necessarily correspond to standard props. In fact it probably won't ... hence need to touch base with the manufacturer. Google Campbell Sailor Prop and from memory look for a company that has Northwest in the name. Located in Vancouver? Anyway, they were very responsive .... even with advice for second-hand props. I know this because I contacted them about my pre-owned prop and they were very helpful.

My 37 came with a 3qm. I have the original booklet and warranty. It is listed on the original bill of sale (27k including extras) that's 1979 dollars.

I believe it shows Mack boring as the warranty handler.

I agree with Jim. Michigan Wheel has a Sailer 3 propeller so its not a Chinese knock-off. Best of luck, choosing a propeller can be a challenge.

Its a Michigan Wheel Sailor 3 prop 16RH14 , exactly the same as the one I put on my '79 Hunter C. Fantome...2 years ago. Right at $400. works fine on mine. But then again I'm not that fast anymore either.
