This thread is a graduation from considering a 310 to actually shopping for one so it's sort of a spin off from our other thread. I hope this doesn't break any rules.

Results of our hunt so far.

1. 310, 2000. 216 hours on engine, 2 port lights broke, exhaust hose skin loose (Overheating maybe, pluged riser?). Owner told broker he's aware of broken port lights and didn't state if he'll do anything about it. Boat appears dirty and unkept. If the owner is this carefree about the condition of his boat I feel we should stay away. Asking price 63K, we offered 48K, counter price by owner 57,500. (Afraid it might be a project boat, so it's about off our list of possibilities)

2. 310, 2004 BEAUTIFUL! Main furling, Air conditioning, custom swinging companionway hatch, halled up and shrinkwrapped every Winter and it shows, shiney beautiful boat, engine hours 260 (approx.). No dinghy. Asking price $79,999, broker reports owner will not go a penny below 75K although we have made no official offer.

3. 310 2006, Very nice with airconditioning. It's not as clean as the 2004 and not as many options such as microwave, no rear grab bar, no in mast furling (Non of these are big issues to us). boat is a little chalky and a hatch handle in the cabin needs reglued. The dodger and bimini are stored away...we think. broker states boat was pulled each Winter. 155 hours on engine (approx.) Biat has roll up dinghy and small outboard but broker reports that owner is keeping it as a bargaining chip (What ever that means). Asking price $79,000, again broker reports owner might go as low as $75,000, again we have made no offer.

I was almost ready to offer on the 2004 or 2006 (Torn between the 2)when I looked around the internet and saw that these were about the highest priced 310's in the country, on top of that from a asking price/actual sell pricesheet that I have obtained from a very fine gentleman here in cyberspace, these owners (as reported by the broker) are only willing to reduce the price by 6%. The average reduction last year was 13%, the total average reductions for the last 4 years is 11%. Do I have unreasonable expectations to think these boats should be obatainable at 70K? Is 70K in the ballpark or is even that too high? Again, we have made no formal offer yet but we're only going on what the broker is telling us, if the owner saw it in writting he might go for it. As owners of these boats, what do you think?

Spending this much money is dizzying...Advice/support please.

Hi Swamp: Whatever you do you will love the boat. All of the boats you mentioned are basically the same save for condition and extras and whether they have lived in fresh or salt water. If you like to work on boats you will love the project boat and save a bunch of money and spend some money and "fun" time making her yours. On the other hand, if you want to sail and not fix then spend some more money and buy one of the others. Re the money, remember boats can be financed over as long as 20 years and the interest is deductable on your Federal return. Visit the boats and see which one you fall in love with. And, don't forget land transportation costs - can be expensive. It's only money - do it!

Thanks Bob, all these boats are local here in the Chesapeake so they're not salt but not completely fresh either. I never really considered over land transportation. That would open up options for maybe other boats but then again we'd have to travel to them to see.

Whazzat?

You sound like you're in a hurry. Slow down, way down. We spent a year looking for our boat, only C34s, only. I got really good spotting condition and details and read everything I could about them. Have you read ALL of the C310 posts on this message board. All of them? You really should. you'd learn an awful lot. Here, too: http://www.catalina310.org/ And would begin to be able to answer your own question about worth, and avoid dealing with brokers. You don't think their commissions have anything to do with NOT lowering prices?

Happy hunting.

When looking this past spring I had decided to take the asking price, deduct costs to remediate what i found during my own pre-survey inspection, and then offer 75% of that. It is (and was) more of a buyers market, and I'm not charitable enough to throw money at strangers (I'm comfortable with NOT paying a fair price if I can negotiate down from what might be considered fair).

The boat I bought was being sold by somebody who was scheduled and willing to go back in the water for another year if he didn't see an offer he liked. We signed a deal at 80% of my calculation, including the standard language associated with him fixing any deficiencies or deducting the cost associated with same, as found by my surveyor during the pre-purchase survey.

I would take the broker's assertions with a grain of salt and offer what you want. I would never offer more than 75% of asking. Nobody lists at their "bottom dollar" price, so why give yourself little to no negotiating room?

Yes it is a dizzying process.... I purchased a 2001 in Jan. and was able to get the % you mention off asking plus a new auto pilot. But the broker had it on a trade and it sat for a year so he wanted the cash. They also had it listed to high and hadn't adjusted it down per NADA. They also told me the same.... "We won't go below xxxx" but that is a sales tactic, I know cause I'm a sales guy. Do all your research and figure out what you are willing to spend and why. Make a fair offer and detail why, remember its only worth what your willing to pay.

My vote is the 04 above, plus at 260 hrs it is just getting broke in.... Check out the engine service manual and you will see what I mean. Good luck and maybe we will see you on the bay soon.

We were just at Rock Hall 2 weeks ago, we came with 6 other Macgregors...We were the only old style Classic though. Say what you will but those powersailors have a heck of a good time! We stayed at North Point Marina which is a really nice place. Maybe this weekend I'll take a day and just go sailing to clear my mind. I have a tendancy to go overboard when I get something in my head.

The broker stated it was advertised as having a "Custom dodger with aft SS grab rail" but it doesn't and actually I never noticed one way or the other.

I am in agreement with Paul, almost = BOAT Break Out Another Thousand. All the boats sound nice, remember that a fresh water boat will always get about 10% more value than a salt water boat. That said you will find that salt water boats will typically have more equipment, due to the nature of the sailing grounds. AC/Heat is a big adder, $3k-$5k, and great to have. So is in mast furling. Electronics are good, and with the age of most of the boats listed should have a few years left. You will find that you can find better, and more advanced electronics, with more features for little cost now days do to improvements and changes. So, do a little shopping on the side and add up your wish list items to try to bring the boats in question apples to apples.... at that point, as said above date a couple (visit them) and wait to fall in love. No matter what your looking at a great boat.

In April we paid your boat #1 price for your #2 2004 boat in Galveston Bay area. Our 2004 (hull 258) with 88 hours needed a bit of work due mostly to sitting unused, but also had new prop, shaft, and bearing as a result of same. I feel like we got the best deal in country as a result of patience. 18% off reduced asking price. Easy to get excited but stay patient.

Witz was purchased in 2008 for 64.5K A/C RF Main, options I would not have added. Asking price 70K. The Admiral worked em over pretty good.
One thing we did get bit by was:
In most contracts it states that once you put you deposit down that the owner can not use the boat. We found from the Garmin plotter, that they had, but it was too late we had already closed.

Ken that is one beautiful boat, I've looked at it online many times, however the 6 foot draft would really keep us out of many places up here in the middle and upper bay, I really wish that was a wing keel, I know we'd have talked by now.

Our broker also told us that the fin keels don't hold their value as much in the northeast. I didn't really believe him but the one fin keel that we looked at was still listed for sale a year later and the price had dropped to $58K compared to the $68K that similar 310s with wing keels were going for. The boat was spotless and had no issues that I could see.
