Cetane booster is recommended by every diesel mfg because the rating of diesel refined in the U.S. is below that which the manufacturers recommend. The engine will run longer, better and more efficient.
Oil additives, and talking about them, is something that makes most normal decent folks, grow hair, and howl at approaching full moons. Seems to bring out the worst in people. I have two dollars to bet, this thread will grow fast, and as sides are picked, name calling, and worse will start up, till a moderator closes the thread, with everyone angry at everyone.
My two cents, diesel fuel today is junk compared to before they changed it a few years ago. It is formulated to work in modern diesel engines. An older engine, made before they reformulated it, is not going to work nearly as well on the new stuff. It only gets by. The new fuel, also can and will allow the growth of mold in the fuel tank, lines and engine. That is expensive to clean out.

oil, and a little off the shelf diesel fuel booster from my local grocery store.

On any diesel thats off road, and a boat surely is, run heating oil if at all possible, and if not available, off road diesel. That can get rid of a lot of the junk additives found in on road diesel. As far as additives I never found anything that seemed to do anything special besides plain old dexron ATF. And then only on engines that needed a tune up and maintenance. Clean fuel, clean filters, clean injectors, correct injection timing (better if tuned to the fuel), and engine maintenance, will provide the greatest efficiency and economy of service.
I've only used MMO in the oil, not fuel either.....
is there a brand of diesel fuel additive you use....I've used several, but could never tell a difference. Pat
I use Amsoil, only because they have proved to me that what they say about there products are true. I run a dual bypass filter on my Duramax and ever since I installed it a little over a year ago, I have never had to change my oil. They tell me instead to do oil samples every 10k miles and they will tell me when its time to change my oil.. They recommend every 25k miles in most cases, but I'm going on 37k miles, and they say my oil is still in good shape.
I figure if their oil and filtration systems are that good, then they must do their R&D homework pretty well. Sorry if I sound like a salesman, but that's my testimony. I run their diesel fuel concentrate in my Duramax about every 3k miles. I really can't tell any difference running it, but my engine lasts another 100k miles, then I guess it helped.

I could only tell a difference on engines that needed work, but Dexron ATF is the only thing ive seen really do anything, at all. Ive seen some rough hammerers smooth out and really quiet down after a good dose of dexron. But some the same could be done by cleaning the injectors. suggesting the ATF is the lazy mechanic way? Maybe not, it also cleans the combustion chambers and rings through higher detergent properties and ignition temps, which both clean, while offering higher lubricity. Cheap, and effective, but dont put any in your car, its got red dye.
Years ago diesels were tuned differently, mechanics would time for peak power, or for peak fuel efficiency, or cold starting properties, but you cant have all three, you had to pick one, sacrifice the others, compromise. Now they tune for emissions period and care less less how they run, a different sacrifice or compromise. With some fiddling most older diesels can be timed to run better with less hammering and some possible gains in efficiency. Sometimes remarkable gains. I got a 190D to jump from 25 MPG hwy to 44+ hwy, and could barely get it to smoke, thats how bad it was screwed up.
