Go the library and find every book you can find on sailing and learning to sail, and read them, BEFORE EVER GOING OUT ON THAT BOAT.

But a 34 foot sailboat is really too big to start out on, especially alone. You need to find someone to go out with you, someone who knows at least as much as you do, and who isnt afraid to read the books you found.

Take a Hands On sailing class. There is just no replacement for a real instructor in a real boat...

Jack is a lot closer to you then I am (in NYC).
I'd love to see a T34C sailboat up close though. I have owned and sailed a T27 from 1967 for over 10 years.

Best thing is take jack up on his offer and than someone to show you what everything on your boat does for sailing and the options you have.
Instruction is good but doesn't need to be pro teacher who gives sailing lessons, you could help jack needs crew sailing if needed and he help you and the plus hesails the area.
Just go slow and sail as much as possible.

Hello Jack,
Thank you for your offer, I would first like to rig the sails, which I am sure need new lines. As I am retired I am available any morning. My e-mail address is sailnoproblem@yahoo.com. the boat is docked right off GSP exit 80.
Thank you again, best regards,
Frank Majowicz

You really do need someone to show you how to set up your boat. Every boat is a little different and books can't cover everything. Even experienced sailors can be confused when setting up a strange boat from scratch.

Frank.....The Tarten 34 is a great boat to start with...Are you in a marina?.....What you need is to make some sailing friends. Nothing better then to be at a active marina or sailing club marina with great boat neighbors. Unplanned Dock parties,Hanging out at the dock talking boat trash with your neighbors,Watching the antics of the speed boaters trying to dock for gas across from the marine, buddy boating on weekend cruises,Learning all the local cruising spots,Going sailing with your new friends on their boat learning how they do things then inviting a nieghbor or two out on yours. Absorbing all their differing ideas and learning what works for you.
I am sure you have read most of the books already, and all you need is practical experience.
Have fun enjoy your new life.:yeah:

Aside from sailing, what is your general boating experience?
I have owned power boats, and did a lot of saltwater fishing both inshore and off. I was also the owner of a aluminum fabricating shop, our main product was marine assecories. (tuna towers, rails, tops, etc.,) On a vacation to the BVI friends and I chartered (captained) a sailboat for a week and I loved it.

I'm in Forked River. I'd be happy to help. We could get your rigging straight on a Friday night or Saturday morning. Then out on the bay so we can show you how to run aground. Then someone can run me through the fine points of trimming a gaff rigged cat boat.

Call me on my c-phone. **908**247**0540**. I know, I shouldn't post the number, but I've done it before and had no problems, at least from here. One grumpy old man did call too see if I was for real. I'm a crochety old man myself so it worked out fine.
