Our 1999 Hunter 420 has a Simpson-Lawrence but it does NOT fit the 5/16 chain that is on the boat.
I have tried many different chains and can’t seem to find one that fits.
I feel either the chain or the windlass has been changed and now I can’t find the chain to fit the windlass.
So I am looking to see what other 42s around 1999 have for a windlass, and see what chain size you may have.
I fear the chain may be a metric size or something.
I have to get either new chain, if I can find the right size or a new windlass (or gypsy) to fit my currant 5/16 3b chain.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The windlass manual will list which chains will work. You can look online for the manual if you don't have one.

I do not know which model it is so it would be a guess.
Most of them say 8mm or 10mm for the chain?

Does yours have a vertical capstan with a cut out on the anchor locker? If so it's the ex- "Take Two" and has a custom installation. That much I would know; what I wouldn't know is what is the correct chain. However, I could put you in touch with the original owner if you like.

Mine is a vertical windlass with a drum on top of the chain gypsy.
I can not see any marks or cuts or anything that makes it look like it was replaced.

I did contact hunter and they said they did install Simpson/Lawrance but different ones on different boat, depending on how the boat was ordered so they could not be more specfic.

I bought the boat from south coast yachts in marine del ray and steve there sold the boat originally. I bought the boat from the second owner.

We have a 2000 420 and the chain size is 5/16 BBB. If you can't figure out what the correct size is, take the gypsy off the windlass and take it to West or another supplier and have them size the chain correctly. Its not difficult to take the gypsy off.

I did just that, and West Marine could not find a chain to fit it.
My chain is 5/16 bbb also but does not fit the windlass.
I believe it must have been replaced with a metric sized gypsy as no one can find a chain to fit it.

so I am looking at a new windlass, the Anchorlift D1012C Dolphin WIndlass for $650.

You Have It

You might have the ex "Take Two". Is the head sticking up a bit through the anchor locker cover? The modification was professional. BTW: you have a hellava boat if it's her! It was my neighbor for many years.
Not sure if the ex owner can help, but since she went to La Paz and did her share of anchoring, I have to believe the windlass worked well. I'll see if he has any insight that can help you. Maybe the rode was changed somewhere along the line. Be back to you.

BTW if worst came to worst, you could always change the gypsy.

Thank Rick

I have looked for a replacement gypsy but since the windlass is no longer made I can't find one

No the whole unit is under the cover and fits the fiberglass molding just as if the boat and it were designed for each other.

Then That's Not Her

I wish I could help, but that's not her. So if it's a factory instal, someone here should have the info you want.

Our 1999 Hunter 450 Passage has a Simpson Lawrence Horizon 1500 windlass that does a great job with our 300' 5/16 G4 chain.

I took the gypsy off and took it down to west marine.
We tried 5/16 bbb, g3 ht and g4
The links fit the sockets but the chain is to loose so it bunches up while under load.

I could not find a 3/8 chain to try.
