WANTED: RayMarine Autohelm 3000

Please help me to locate a RayMarine Autohelm 3000 to troubleshoot my Autohelm 3000.

I can send you my old head and motor, wanting that you plug in my motor and see if it runs OK. Then, plug in your motor on my head unit and see if it also doesn't just immediately crap out.

Other than that, yes, I would also dearly like find a reasonably priced unit and replace the whole thing.

Motor is 12V, Robert.. Connect the two wires across 12 V and motor should run.. Be ready for a possible short .. use a 12-15 ampere fuse in line.. Then reverse the connection and the motor should run in the opposite direction.. The control head is a different thing requiring a circuit diagram for testing , or substitute testing as you suggest. Note that a newer head from a 4000 or 4000+ will work (has to have the flux gate compass) with that motor if ya find it to be OK.. sometimes these heads are available on e-bay or Craig's List..

If there is a fault in the wiring or with the motor that caused the first head to fail, swapping in a known good head will likely blow that head, too. So, swapping is not a good idea. I know, I made that mistake and killed my backup control head. There was a short in the motor wiring. The output transistors will blow almost immediately trying to drive a short circuit.

The AH4000 does not require an external flux gate compass, its compass is built-in.

I have a complete AH4000 system for sale. I intend to list it in the gear ads here on this site.

The 3000 is pretty impossible to find. I know, I tried. I agree with Claude check the motor first. It might actually be easier to find a motor at Radio Shack and fix it if the head is OK.

After you check the motor for proper operation you should check the wiring for shorts to ground, and just plain broken wires. Also take the head apart and check the internal fuse. once all that is confirmed good get the install manual out and go through the commissioning process.

FYI, I know some owners found a replacement owner of (at all things) a big hobby shop.
