Ever been to a muslum country? Women walk behind their husbands and aren't allowed to worship with males. Even after dinner, women aren't allowed to associate with males. They stone women to death for adultery and less. Women are subservient to males.
The grass always seems greener on the other side of the street . Till you go there and see it's nothing but a bunch of weeds.

Keep it up,

here in mazatlan and in ensenada, both, i didnt find the treated like animals or slaves thing to be true when they deal with repairs and boats belonging to females. au contraire--i was treated like a princess and my work was done correctly, unlike in san diego, wherein , anyone owning a boat with low income is treated as is a criminal.\
i donot plan on visiting any specified muslim countries.

Went to a nice restaurant on Saturday night, too late for food so stayed in bar where there was just another couple talking quietly near us and 6, 30ish somethings at another table, then 2 more joined them. The language and the ever increasing volumn was astounding. And the worst mouths were the females. It went on and on and though we gave them long amazed stares, not one of them actually acknowledged that we were even there. I am only upset with myself that I did not say something ... at least to the management. I blame their parents really, they showed themselves to be completely self absorbed and obvioulsly cared nothing for anyone beyond their good time. I also believe management should have stepped in without us having to say something.

Regarding Mainsail's comment about giving up....... please do not! Keep shining your light and I really believe that we can teach (in the case of these boars) or remind those who have forgotten (so caught up in the race) that kindness matters, and being treated well by others stays with the recipiant a long time, and gets passed on.
Don't stop believin'............hold on to that feeling....

I still fall in that under 30 category, bairly. I often hold the door for the people behind me until either another (middle age) guy comes to the door, or all the women have came through, but I have to be honest, I have never heard about giving your spot in line being expected, and therefore I doubt I have ever done so. However it does make sense...

Fasinating study. Etiquette is seldom taught in schools, I believe it will become worse with texting generation, but we are a social species sooner or later the pendulum should swing back to hand shakes, looking each other in the eye, opening doors, ect.

Similar story last week. First at the elevator for the Dr.s office. Held the door for folks to get in. Did the same getting out and every last one of them got in line in front of me for the receptionist.

Were they elderly? I often notice that some folks who reach a certain point in their lives don't give much thought to this sort of thing and would likely just walk over someone who keeled over in front of them, much less think to allow you to the deserved position at the head of the line. Not all, just some.

Here's a little scenario that happened to me on Friday and I was hurt by the rudness of it......what do you think?.....

I was in a Starbuck's parking lot, and it was very busy. I drove further and further away from the store to get a parking spot...... finally, got one and as I parked another car parked at same time facing me. I had not been pushy or impatient, just parked and took a little time to check my phone (I'd driven 2 hours) then got my stuff together to go in. The guy in the car opposite of me went in and was on his way out as I was coming in......I entered, saw him approaching so I waited and held the door with a smile...(and he was a few steps away so it was a very obvious door holding :)) ...only to have him move to the other side of the glass door and open that for himself, leaving me with an open door. It felt very mean and I was hurt by his pointed action against my obvious kindness. In case it is not obvious, I am female ..... I doubt a guy would have given it 1 second pause......but I did. sadly I remember it enough to write all of this !!!

What a dummy. LuzSD, you can open the door for me any time.

And as far as my situation, it was a mixed crowd and I would have expected the older folks to be more considerate. Young folks today I expect the "ME" attitude from.

Thanks Tim, I'd love to!! :)

Re: yours, I am sorry to see such apathy towards each other. I love the slow it down, pay it forward, pass on goodwill that I am embracing these days, it is the only sane way that I can cope with such a rushed society. Don't get me wrong, I drive fairly fast, but I pay attention the entire time.......I LIKE driving and it infuriates me that I am on the road with those behind the wheel but not present at all........ and I hate to admit it but I do think one of these days I am going to follow that car that is texting and swerving .......right to where they stop and see how they are outside of their car.....I am so curious about bad behavior.

I observed this years ago here at school. There are a limited number of choice dishes in our cafeteria line. I found if I held the door I would sometimes miss out on the last salad. What I have learned to do is to hold the door open for them after I've step in and let them take over as they cross the threshold.
I came from a polite but practical household where with four siblings it was always competitive.
The uptick here is that I have also noticed how many of our high school students hold the door for me. (We are a 95% Hispanic population here or it could just be my graying hair) I've also noticed that people talk louder and slower to me.

Maine Sail has opened a very good topic. Others have contibuted other symptoms of the underlying disease. I use the word symptom as these examples are manifestations of an insidious disease I refer to as self absorbtion. A favorite pastime of mine is philosophical thought and it's relation to historical events. Every social collapse throughout history has been preceded by an internal belief of the individual that they were somehow more important than anyone else. It is because of this that it is more important than ever to keep demonstrating good will and yes, manners to as many as possible. At some point an awareness will arise that those who consider others first are on to something. So don't give up and also be on guard against the Holier than thou temptation. I can say without reservation you are right in your behaviour.

Interesting findings. So...why hasn't the over-30 crowd done a better job of teaching the under-30 crowd better manners?:D

I have been to both Indonesia (most populous Muslim country in the world) and Malaysia many times.

I didn't observe any of those things in the places I visited. Nobody gets stoned to death for anything.

I think the manners in the places I have been in the US are wonderful, I couldn't have met nicer and friendlier people.

About the only criticism I have of Americans in general is their ignorance of the rest of the world and their belief that the US is the best.

Was asked how we celebrate 4th of July here in Australia recently. Often been asked what I did for Thanksgiving here too :)

1. I feel that there should be a "disconnect" (pi :)) between the door holding and the line holding. The courtesy for holding the door should be reciprocated by the person for whom the door was held open. The person holding the door open was clearly there first.

2. I am also sure that our parents, when they were our age and we were in or below our 30's, thought for sure that "our" generation was going to hell in a handbasket. Remember the 60's - OK except for those of you who were there and, of course, can't! The kid's iThingies today were our "transisitors" back then - "Get that earphone outta your ear...or???" I recall trying to explain "stereo" to my folks - I even had two of the same records, one mono one stereo.

3. Courtesy matters, at least to me. It's worth keeping.

4. I just "sincerely dislike" "no problem." Guess it IS generational.

5. I'm getting to the point that the "girls" are holding the doors open for ME! I ain't complainin'.

Oh yes. I lived abroad for almost 4 years. The ignorance of the American population is directly proportional to their distance from the coasts. Except for Chicago. :)

I don't agree on ignorance away from the coasts but they sure are a lot happier day to day.

Ignorance is bliss.

And then someone said to me: "And you're the happiest person I know!" :):):)
