Boat Etiquette - Somethings are just WRONG!

It's not always the stuff ON the boats, it's often the boats themselves.

Our dock neighbor has a Pearson 33. Nice boat. At least it used to be. When we first came into the marina back in 1998, we were required to pass a “visual” inspection” – the marina wanted to be sure the boats that moved in were “clean.” However, there is no requirement to keep your boat in that condition. We met our dock neighbor a few times. Jack would come down once a year or so with a new girlfriend and have her do the woodwork and would take the boat out with her. Last time we saw him was six years ago. The nice white boat was getting blacker and blacker. Two winters ago it almost sank because his scuppers in the cockpit got gummed up and water started rising to the point where it would have reached a louver and flooded down below. The live aboard on the dock on the other side of Jack’s boat and I both called the marina, who sent a guy over to clear the scupper.

Just a few weeks ago, the marina put a locked chain across the stern of Jack’s boat. Guess he finally stopped paying his rent.

We found that completely counterproductive as far as the marina is concerned. They could use the slip for new nice clean renter. But no, what do they do? They KEEP a slob right there, which can’t be moved!!!

One of the issues is “Where do boats go to die?”

Wish there was an answer...

For our neighbor, the marina was going to put it up for auction, so they finally, after years of pleading, power washed it. What a relief.

Uh oh, the lock's back on!

hay--watch that stuff--i have a formosa and i tarp it, but not as nicely as the wanderer in the pic.....i also have a window unit air conditioner--i cruise, i dont sit in a marina forever-- but , here in mexico, to not have an air conditioner is to die a long lingering horrible death of overheating. for what it is worth--the window unit a/c modes are a lot more efficient than the marine units. mine is 5000 btu and cools my entire formosa.....

i would rather have an osprey nest on my tarp than a shiny boat that never leaves dock....

btw--the captain rron movie is the official owners guide for all formosa owners......

the plastic owl on my bowsprit says hello to y'all.....

oh, yes--i draw the line at the fridge thing--i dont own one. wont have one.. and the apartment type dont work so well on an invertor.....

I have worked on commercial boats that are all steel and a stainless fastener is an oddity... but they are built with a life expectancy.
but it pains me to see an otherwise nice aluminum or fiberglass pleasure craft with rust stains, fading fasteners, rotting wood and silicone or other sealer that was applied with a trowel.....

Not laughing at - laughing with. It's an homage to the official Formosa owners' guide.

There's a Formosa 51 in my marina, in fact, and it's been there for about as long as I've been there. Really clean, though. No osprey nests, no tarps, no deflated fenders or tires hanging off the rail, but lots of pretty brightwork, including the masts and spars.

It's my official 'wish it were summer again' film, by the way.

The powerboater at the end of my dock is rebuilding his boat for a trip to the Bahamas. He just installed a hot tub IN the aft deck. I think he fills it with the drips from the window A/C unit nearby.

the osprey nests keep out the rainwater, to which formosa boats are allergic.....is in the manual.....

Then there is the other end of the spectrum. The guy with the really nice boat, teak decks, sat radio in a dome, very clean, the hired hands come every week and keep it clean.
I've never seen it move from the dock in 4 years and have never seen the owners.

bill--i went to puerto vallarta to eval a boat for a soul i met online--i love looking at boats for others--is fun!! but this vagabond 47 had been kept up well by the crew since boat was built in 1980----every day they were cleaning her and making sure she was varnished and clean----
teak caprails were toast-- they werent just rotting, they were shredding lonjgitudinally... gag--made me ill.... i went inside to find cabin sole rot from leaky overhead hatches never repaired. there was teak rot and sanded to nothing teak brightwork--badly maintained but was badly maintained daily and religiously--i went to lift the hinged helm seat to check out lazarettes---thing broke in my hand as it was severely cracked.
and this didnt include systems.......in teakwood alone, this badly maintained boat was in need of MORE THAN 150K USD TO REPAIR. rig was original. chainplates original..tangs --original-- be wary of boats with regular crews working on them. could be a good or a bad thing.

looked reallly good from 100 ft....

Laundry, especially stuff life jock straps hanging out to dry from the boom. Rusty old bikes on the deck. Generally bad upkeep and maintenance. It's apparent that some people buy a boat as another toy an then move on to the next thing. More Money than brains. If ya ever get to Esenada, Baja, Mexico check the harbor. If a boat sinks they just leave it there. You can see masts sticking out of the water. If the harbor wasn't so polluted I'k like to dive and salvage some stuff. When the old SS Catalina, the great white steamship, was taken there it sat until it sank. Sad ending. There is a fish processeing plant there and the seagulls are the size of turkeys.

That would not surprise me. You wouldn't believe the stuff we find....

ensenada harbor has been cleaned up and there is no longer any anchoring whatsoever. when i was there there were NO sunken boats visible and everyone has to use a marina except during newport to ensenada race week. even bandidos marina has been removed. mexican government works fast when it wants to ..... when were you last in ensenada??? sounds like many years ago.....

charlie cobra--the asking price on the vagabond was 150k non negotiable(HAHA), as the owner thunk he has a golden prize....is in vallarta marina, if anyone is interested in a 20k value for 150k usd.....

If you wnat to see a harbor with an inordinate number of derelict boats, shopping carts and mattresses, among other things, either under or floating in the water, you oughtth see Ala Wai in Honolulu. It is an absolute disgrace! After about 14 trips to Hawaii, it appears that the same derelict boats are still there. The ubiquitous blue tarps for sun awnings, in shreds, rusting bicycles on deck, dead potted plats on the cabin tops, no sails, sometimes no rig, and tons of bottom growth.

One would think the State of Hawaii might want to present a better image to the world, since this is supposed to be a tourist mecca.

The "Wanderer" is currently for sale, couldnt find a price though.

I believe I may have been on a Formosa once. There was a large boat yard west of Lake Minnetonka years ago, dont know if its still around. I went up on the deck and looked it over, stood at the wheel looking it over, peeked in the cabin, what a cool boat.

Was there last in 2000 on a cruise. Glad they finally got it cleaned out. No mas manana
