yeah--this is a hit the recreational boater and forget about the involvement of navy in sd bay. they wanna kill copper yet they bitch about the teredo worms brought into sd bay. someone needs to reassess this bs in a somewhat intelligent manner, then address the problems of sd bay, most of which have been caused not by recreational boating but by navy and merchant vessels and their increasing presence in the bay.
it is actually GOOD that it has been dropped at this point.
This isn't about San Diego, it's about the entire state. And I wonder how many other California boat owners will think it's a good thing when in-water hull cleaning is banned because copper continues to be an issue.
There ain't no magic bullet. When tin was banned, the best alternative was the less effective copper-based paints. Nothing has changed. There is no cheap, better alternative. Eventually we will all have to bite the bullet and switch to something that doesn't work as well as copper.
HooRay for the lobbists! If it was not for them we would have many times the number of crazy regulations.

Today I participated in the quarterly meeting of the Marina Inter Agency Coordinating Committee where it was announced by a member of Senator Kehoe's staff that SB 623 will be reintroduced in the near future by an as yet unnamed legislator, who shares her committment to reduce copper in our coastal waterways.
This information seems to match that which was in the original announcement.fstbttms said:

I get the sense that amongst California boaters (who have a powerful lobby), this is a very unpopular piece of legislation. I think it's going to have a tough time being passed no matter who is pushing it.

It sounds like your concern over getting this bill passed is related to the fact that you realize that if it isn't eventually your business might go away because they might ban in water hull cleaning. I can understand your concern. I wouldn't want to lose my access to my diver any more than you would want to have to find another line of work.
