O Day Mariner 2+2 my driveway/ Lake Wallenpalpac
When I was in trade school to learn to be a auto mechanic, (that's what we were back then, not "techs" like my son is now!) (Johnson College) after a stint in the army, I had an instructor who used to harp, "Never send in a pony to do a elephant's job"!
That being said, I've ripped a few transmissions apart in my time.
the clutch drums on some are thin like, (I swear they are) "High "C" juice cans!
There are 4-5, 1/2" wide, 4" round paper clutch plates pushing against thin steel plates, the pressure is held inplace by "O" rings.
When I think of the hydraulic PSI the converter is pushing against those thin plates and clutches, when he revs the pee outta that motor comming up outta that steep ramp, makes me cringe!
He may have electric brakes on the van (I sure hope so), Chris didn't mention it.
I took "Fever Dream" home the first time without E brakes and stopping off the highway off ramp I heated up my brakes a tad more than I wanted to,(thank God for a manual trans).
I want a full frame, manual trans as my puller. The motor is iffy, I've driven some V-6 that have more bottom end snort than a V-8. (Chris's Dodge Ram 1500 is the best truck I've ever seen to tow, trans cooler, oversized brakes radiator, pretty good gas mileage, power is great, better than my buddies Toyota that was made to tow)
Best truck I ever pulled with was the Ford F-150, 3.0 straight 6 cylinder, 5 speed. First gear was designed to pull with low ratios, real low, like you never used 1st except to start off towing with.
Here in Pa. we're either going up a hill or down, all the water I've sailed in has been in a bowl. I need H.P. to get outta the water
Looking at the pics of the haulers in Europe, it does make you wonder.......... But a mini van is a long way away form those fine engineered cars!

what would worry me...

would be exceeding the hitch weight. From what I have experienced with 2 dodge minivans, the towing weight is 3500 lbs. That being said, I have pulled both an M-22 and M-26C without issue. But, they are light boats. The 26 actually weighs less, because of the water ballast.:)

You have to figure that the last employees at the auto manufacturer to check the load figures are their lawyers, not their engineers!

We watched a minivan pull out a trailer with a small motorboat -maybe 16' with a 60HP motor. Two guys had to drape themselves over the van's hood before it finally had enough traction to get the boat up and out.

Our tow vehicle is an Xterra 4x4 with a 3.3L and auto tranny. Tows our boat like a dream... but the loaded trailer is under 2000 lb :)

:naughty: Guilty

I used to tow my boat with a Ford Ranger. If there was any slime on the ramp I'd have to ask a few guys at the marina to jump in the bed of the truck so I could get it started up the ramp....:D

I learned that if you buy them a beer afterwards .... then the next time you don't even have to ask... guys just start jumping in your truck... :Liar:

Station wagon towing

Many years ago (once-upon-a-time) I bought a power boat, motor and trailer and had a 65 Chevrolet full size wagon w/327 v8 and standard clutch trans. First time up out (almost NOT ) of the ramp, smoked up the clutch plates (wheeew) finally got it out. Realized after that it was geared for highway running and got a steady 21 MPG. :) Next day went and traded for a 73 ford wagon, was 3 years old, nice, (we got 4 kids ) 350 v8, auto trans, and had a trailering package all ready in place. It got 16 MPG. It never failed to yank that boat up out of a verity of ramps for the next 8 years. Now I have a 92 f-150 4x4, push button trans and does a great job of pulling my O'day 22.

Just LIL here, but the admiral's '03 Odyssey pulls my Mac X just fine. Curb weight of 4300 lb, wider track and longer wheelbase than my new Highlander, or even the 4-Runners I used to tow with some years back. I have dual axles on the trailer, but the whole rig weighs about 4k, with a light tongue load. No problem coming up ramps with it, either, presumably as long as the tires are dry, though I've never had the pleasure of trying wet ones.

The Highlander has more power, and has a 5k tow rating (3.5k for the Honda, and that's with load equalization), and has 4WD, but wheelbase and track counts for a lot at highway speeds, IMO.

And I put new disc brakes on one axle, and may add rotors and calipers to the other, depending on how it behaves on some trips this summer. But as a former OTR driver and mover of giant dirt machines, I'm not comfortable not having brakes on the trailer that are in good working order. Seen and been in too many situations where goo brakes were the only thing between me and disaster.
