I am looking for anyone who has recently replaced the mattres in the owners cabin in their Hunter 456. What brand and type did you use and how do you get it down and into the rear cabin. Thanks

Here is an alternative solution that we did. And you can get this practically anywhere. The main foam is from HD and the foam top was from bed bath and beyond if I remember or you can order it online.

Simply custom cut to fit, a little spray adhesive in between the pieces, and for a fraction of the cost of a custom mattress, you.. or at least I.. sleep like a baby.

What is cool about mine is it is two pieces which are easily removed or folded back under way to make my rounds of the stuffing box, etc.

Cheers

Edit: Recently I added another layer to the bottom. Must be too many Sundowners. I seem to compress the mattress easier... hmmmmm.

We bought a memory foam topper for our mattress at home and found it made a huge difference for very little money. If we wanted to upgrade the mattress on our boat we would do the same thing with it. We purchased it at Costco, it was in a relatively small package until we opened it up.
good luck, Bob

I am not sure what is wrong with your current bedding... On my boat, the prior owner had just replaced all the cushions. They looked good but were too hard for sleeping. We bought memory foam toppers and now sleep great. We got a good deal at an online dealer called "foam factory" or something like that. We got the 3 inch foam for the v berth. It is good but very heavy. We later purchased 2 1/2 inch foam for the other berths. It made all the difference in the world for much less than the $1,200. that was quoted for custom v berth bedding.

OK, OK, I finally have to admit it: I have no clue why anyone asks about mattresses and sleeping on a boat. These questions are almost as entertaining as "What's the best bottom paint or line or color for my boat?"

I don't know about you folks, but my comfort level for sleeping is NO indication of what might work for you. I'm surprised folks don't ask about pillow firmness. :) My mother-in-law spent an entire YEAR doing mattress research, made her choice and has hated it ever since.

Now if someone asked about what's available on the market, that'd be one thing, but so often we see "What works for you?"

Gimme a flat surface, and I'll sleep anywhere, anytime. I have been known to sleep standing upright between subway cars!

Ever go into a mattress store? What do people do? They get ON the mattress and see if ti works for them. Even do that on TV ads, right?

Oh, well, maybe it's just me, but I find these questions amusing at best.

Oh, also, must be time for my nap! :):):)

Happy hunting, sleep well...:):):)

Not so much in spite of what I said, really. My mother-in-law got that foam and hated it 'cuz it made her too hot. That's my entire point.

Glad it worked for you. :)

Stu are you ex Military? In my younger days I could sleep anywhere on anything. Amuze if you will, but when you get three hours off watch, I need something more than a rolled up towel and a camel hump to sleep on.

However that is subject to the needs of the service.

Cheers mate

Edit: Your Mother in Law on your boat.... I can barely take that on land. Anyone got an extra cannon ball laying around? I may need it for ballast.

Latex makes an excellent mattress. If we had the room, I would have made a latex mattress from two different densities of latex. Harder on the bottom and a softer layer on top. We ended up with only a 4 inch 36-38# mattress which I find very good.

Latex has some advantages on a boat because it is a natural product it does not mold like regular foam. It is heavier but will last for 20-30 years.

There is no "Best" product. Foam is the cheapest and the spring mattresses are the most expensive. Most everything else falls somewhere in between. Whatever product give you the best nights sleep is usually regarded as the best.

Ok, Here's a tip for those wanting to replace the foam in cushions, mattresses, etc... I found it to be MUCH easier to cut foam using a electric (dual blade) carving knife rather then a single bladed razor blade or knife. Recommended to me by the factory where I purchased my foam. Used it to cut my 6" replacement foam V-berth mattress on a H335, it really cuts like butter....

Only ex-non-military, but I salute all those who serve. Always and everyday.

I lived in Iran in the mid-70s and never slept with a camel, much to my chagrin. No ex-wife jokes here, please folks.

Thanks for the cheers.

My m-i-l actually has sailed with us. Great lady, passed away two years ago. Sorely missed. Never dead weight. Her mattress choice was at home. Same material, same body sleeping on it, or trying to...

Interesting what happens when you pike a hornet's nest with a stick.

:deadhorse:

Oh, I forgot...I'm doing my yoga exercises on the rocks. :D

Thanks,

Stu
