How much Hypalon glue do I need?

I just bought a set of boat number plates for my Achilles dinghy. They are 3.5" x 18" and I have two of them.

I have 5 ounces of two-part Hypalon glue on-hand and I am wondering if that will be enough. If not, I want to get more before I start the glue job, but I don't use the glue very much, and supposedly it has a shelf life so I don't want to buy if I don't need it. Each plate requires two thin coats of glue to both the plate and the dinghy area. So I need enough glue for a total of eight thin coats for both plates.

Has anyone glued these boards on their dinghy and know how much glue it really takes?

I don't know what they look like but I just glued weaver pads on my dinghy
and had plenty glue left over and thin coating goes a long way.

Number plates

Hello Rich,

Maybe you should staple or nail those number plates to the dink!;)

The glue was never a real winner for me. Rub rail came off, handles came loose, small pocket for registration sticker came loose, dink deteriorating. Perhaps I should have read the directions more closely!!!!

When we added numbers we either stensiled them on or fastened them onto a board that we zip tied to the handles on the dink. Of course the board was often in the way when we turned the dink up-side-down for storage.

Best Wishes

i tried the number plates but found magic marker worked better--i kept the numbers inside the boat, so were visible from above and opposite sides.

Hi Rich,
My wife said use the nails, but make sure you're out a ways from shore. (I don't think she'll forget the "Throw her in" comment. :naughty:) Now I'll never find my hand compass, but that's different.

These "number boards" are custom made by http://www.boatnumberplate.com and they are made for either Hypalon or PVC. They are flexible so you can deflate/inflate without the numbers or sticker coming off. Rather pricey at $46 but for years I have used stencils and magic marker or paint with poor results. The paint runs under the stencil and looks terrible when done and the magic marker transfers to the other parts of the boat when folded and fades so badly that I need to re-do it almost every year.

I have had good luck with the glue having put on D-ring patches and made patch repairs that have always been excellent.

Nails are out. Wife tossing is in. You guys are funny.....

Hi Rich, I bought the same number kit last year for my inflatable, mine took the PVC glue which I purchased from WM. It came in a 25cc tube, I needed almost 2 tubes to glue mine on (almost 50cc), which I also picked up at WM. Cleaned the boat and back of plates with accetone as per directions, they really stuck good !! Happy with the way they turned out.. Good Luck, Mike.

Rich, since you already bought the plates, and were just asking about the glue, there should be no wonder at all about the suggestion to use nails! Not from these guys!!!

Please let us know how the wife throwing goes. Last I heard, the record distance was 46 inches. IIRC, it was set by a fellow from Newfoudland visiting the America's Cup Racing in Venice when his wife insisted on moving the small inflatable boat they were on because she was afraid those big f*king sailboats would run her over, and he was there right at the turning mark with his camera.

Good luck.

Thanks Mike. That is the info I am looking for. Was it 50cc for both plates, or 50cc for each plate? 50cc is about 2 ounces, so it sounds like I will have plenty of glue for the install. Did you use two coats for both the plate and the dinghy area?

I will probably mix up half of what I have (2.5 oz) and put on one plate. If I need more glue I can mix it up. If it is enough for one, then I will still have enough for the second one.

You are right, Stu. I'm not at all surprised about the nail suggestion any more than anyone else is surprised about my wife tossing idea........

Blow torch works pretty well, just make sure3 that you don't bury thru the rubber and let any of the hydrogen out, it might expload. I fill my dink with H cause it's lighter that way.

My wife says "Once you apply the glue to the number plate, that you should firmly sit on it until the glue hardens." Welcome to the doghouse. :kick:
See you out on the water.

Rich, Yes it was 50cc for both plates, I traced on outline on the rubber boat then applied glue to it, then to the back of the plate I believe it said wait 15min. then stick the plate on. I forget it might have said two coats of glue on each? Anyways, I did like the directions said and it came out very good! Mike

Thanks, Mike. I had also sent off an email to the boatnumberplate people and I just received a replay that an installation requires 2-3 oz for both plates.

So I am good to go.

I installed the flexible plates I bought thru WM a couple of years ago (BTW it took 2 tubes of hypalon glue.)

My question is how did any of you guys get the state registration stickers to stay on? I've had no luck at all with that.

Watch the humidity when gluing them on. I bought the plates and glued them on this spring when the humidity was low. I also had to glue the floor back in as well. Both of those projects turned out fine. The little "mushrooms" that stow the paddles on our dink had started to come off. I glued those back on 2 weeks ago when the humidity here was high. I used clamps and backing plates for those and they did not stick. If you can do it somewhere that is air conditioned to get good temps and humidity that would surely help. Good luck!
