Hi all! I finally found the gas gauge.....why in the world is it in such an obscure place? The only way I could read it --- I stuck my cell phone under there and took a photo of the guage! What an odd place to put it....

Anyway..... where is the oil gauge or dipstick thingie?

Thanks for any help!

When you locate it Kimy the procedure is to pull the dipstick and wipe it off, then reinsert and pull and read. Don't read from the initial pull, it's not accurate. Also, if it was just shut off let it sit 20 minutes before checking. Good Luck!

Sorry you do net get an oil gauge, just an oil pressure sensor, a warning lamp and a buzzer. The dipstick will tell you if you have an adequate amount oil when you head out and should that level fall you should hear a loud buzzer. Two things, 1) Don't trust the gas gauge and 2) check the oil for level and consistency every time you take the boat out.

One Other Dipstick Thingie ................................

..................... you may want to check (while we're on the subject) is the transmission oil level dipstick. The transmission is found at the rear of the engine and, somewhere on the top of the transmission, you will find a dipstick screwed into it. If the engine is a Yanmar, you will want to measure the oil level WITHOUT screwing the dipstick into the transmission, just lay it on the access hole.

Using the SEARCH menu at the top of the this page is an invaluable source of information on anything pertaining to sailboats. Probably even a section on dipstick thingies in there :D.

As others have said, welcome to the site, and don't be a stranger.

Not to hijack a thread here but I've always wondered what sailing around Chattanooga would be like. What's the reservoir like for sailing : is the sailing good, how are the winds, what about depth, is there enough room to explore and gunk hole? We've always loved visiting Chattanooga and never thought about sailing in the area. Thanks for enlightening us Coastal Cruisers on your cruising waters.

What kind of oil?

Ok....is it just like a car? Is it regular oil or is there special oil....... Hey...if I don't ask the questions I won't know so hang in there with the questions!!!!

Does the oil look black if it's bad? If it's OK is more see thru?

Explain this about the buzzer please

So...if the buzzer goes off...... how do you shut it off and what exactly does that mean? IT won't blow up I hope..... I'll make sure to check it every time..... how many times do you change the oil? Like twice a year? Is there a way to see your mileage? And where would the warning lamp be?

Top of engine?

Still trying to find top of the engine..... I've been goggling like crazy..... I don't want to take something apart and not be able to put it back together agian if you get my drift.

I do want to know where these things are....... Is the rear of the engine near the steps too where the dipstick is? I wonder?

Is there a diagram of the engine? I've been trying to find one.

Re: Girl Sailor here...where is the oil gauge or dipstick th

Kimmy,
First you want to know where the forward and reverse lever is. and the throttle. Other Hunter owners can help you there.

Buzzer, when you turn the key? is normal.. should stop after engine starts...

With shift lever in NEUTRAL some boats have a button for "glow plugs" You hold that down for 30 seconds with key "on" then, while still holding the button down. turn the key to start. The warning lamp should be in the panel with the key and buzzer. they would come on when low on oil or if engine stops running. Diesel engine oil turns black soon as it's put in after an oil change just the way diesels are. Oil change before and after each season at least.

unless you motor allot. Little diesels in sailboats get many hours of distance on a few gallons of fuel not like car or gas powered speed boat.

Just a few questions for you. is your boat in the water? Have you any crew yet? Sailing experience?

If were there I could give you the basics! I have Family in the Hixson and Soddy Daisey areas. My son used to sail up here withe a small racing club, and with me sometimes, He has some experience cruising and racing but not likely able to teach.

Suggestions; Take a sailboat diesel engine class ( you may have to travel some to find one)
Read! how to sail books, Also; YouTube has thousands of instructional vids on how to do just about everything

Re: Girl Sailor here...where is the oil gauge or dipstick th

The buzzer can be twofold. Mine is a Low Oil Pressure and a High Engine Temp buzzer, either way, if it buzzes, shut down the engine, because both of those is bad. And I just found out my buzzer is bad, so I just received a replacement. When you turn on the igition, you should hear it beeping before you start the engine (low pressure). If not, you may need a replacement buzzer (I have a few extra)

Try www.marinedieseldirect.com. They have many engine manufacturers and some photos or at least diagrams. The back of the engine is the aft end of the boat towards the stern. There would usually be two cables from your steering binnacle down to the engine: one's the throttle, the other one is the transmission.

Kimy, as Denise stated, diesel oil gets black very soon and is absolutely normal. You can download maintenance schedules from most engine manufactures. As suggested, spring and fall will work just fine unless you motor all the time. As far as tracking "mileage" use between changes think about keeping a log book recording time running and any other info for future reference. If you track fuel usages also you will find out just how far you can go on a gallon and won't need that fuel anymore. Welcome and GL. Dan

Sailing on the Tennesee River in Chattanooga

Good Morning from Atlanta (where I live -- boat is just docked in Chattanooga)...

Chickamauga Lake is a wonderful sailing lake. There are several sailing clubs there as well.
The great thing about having the boat there, is the culture in Chatt-town..... just lovely. The Hunter Museum, great restaurants...the aquarium...they've really had a rebirth of the city and have done an incredible job in my book.

Hope you get up there sometime...if you do...let me know you're welcome to come aboard!
