I would like to remove the covering from the life lines. I tried a knife to cut it off but it is hard as a rock and would not cut. Have any of you removed the covering successfully?

Try heating the cover with a hair dryer, I've never done it before but i read it in another post.

Why do you want to? I'd think bare wire would be unsightly, plus a meathook could be quite annoying. I'll bet that stuff is really tough to get off. Mine at least, looks like it was hot dipped. It'd be easier just to get new line.

Ask over at the Association....I'm sure someone has done it.....

My freind those life lines which come like this, covered is fora purpose, the plastic is for protection of your hand from any filament from the wire. If you take out the plastic cover it may be that a loose filament will cut your hand any moment. There are other kind of life lines that comes without the plastic cover, those lines a made of better and thick steel wire.

Rather than remove the cover, the previous owner of my boat covered my boat's lifelines at the back with rubber water-pipe insulators, and then those are covered with canvas sleeves made of Sunbrella. Works great, looks fantastic, feels great against my back as I sit on the rear rail conning the boat.

Note:
If you find ANY meat hooks in your lifeline wires, replace 'em promptly. Same for your boat's vertical standing rig.

I had the same issue with my Catalina 22. My solution was to buy the next size up plastic lifeline cover and put it on top of the existing one.

We like our bare SS life lines, but we still have loose-fitting "cushions" for the places where crew wants to lean back against them on each side of the cockpit. Note that this situation did not get better or worse when we transitioned from the old vinyl-covered ones to the new bare ones -- the problem is always the small diameter of the life line is uncomfortable to the back.
Because those cushions are loose, they cannot trap water and lead to corrosion. (We remove 'em thru the cold mid-winter months when the boat is decommisioned anyway; cold rain and mold are not good for the cloth surfaces.)

We had to remove the white plastic on the life lines on our 309
It was a condition of the yacht club if racing, the main reason being any damage to the lines is visible.
I used a heavy duty cable stripper that has sharp adjustable pin, you just run it down the line and then peal it off like a banana skin
Did the whole boat in less than an 1hr
Wasn't happy that we had to do it but now think it looks better

Offshore racing has same safety requirements -stripped mine with a draw knife. Took a couple hours, but it's reassuring to be able to see any rust or damage.

That's why I replaced my lines with dyneema. It's approved for racing and very easy to splice. You just need a ceramic knife to cut it. Plus it comes in several different colors :)
And if you buy some extra you can make some soft shackles with the remnants.

Hey gpdno

Your profile pic is a very interesting view point. Did someone hoist you in a bo'sun's chair or how did you get up there... Great pic, wish you had more.

Ya. Hoisted up with a bosuns chair off the main halyard. If you look closely you can see my friend near the bow holding the line.
Went up there to instal a wind indicator.

Just take a utility knife with a new blade and run it down the wire as if you were peeling a carrot, comes right off once you get going, replace it with the WM split covering if you don't like looking at the small dia wire.. I picked up some Dyneema, it's going on as soon as I get a round tuit.
