Anyone else ever bought one of those darned signal horns from Attwood, test it a few months later, only to find it's completely depressurized?:cussing:

I suspect I'll be going with the one you can pump up yourself.

I gave up on air-powered years ago. Get one (West/Orion) that you just blow into the hole. It's loud.

I got one you inflate

I got one that you inflate with a small pump or compressor. Pump it up to 150PSI, lasts for a long time, and is a one time cost. Have had mine for nearly three years now. Costs less that one of the CO2 models.

Plus one of those lung-powered jobs, both would improve my value/dollar spent at present rates!

^ thats the one I have, there's a little plastic at the end. when it breaks you cut part of a sandwich bag and you are good to go.

plenty loud.

Those plastic air horns are great, except when you're in fog for a looong time, that's when that CD of horn signals comes in real handy. Hope you have cockpit speakers! :)

I have one of the inflatable air horns too and they work great. Even when you run out of air it only takes a minute to recharge with the pump that comes with the unit. Just test it proior to pulling out of the slip and you are golden.

Testing

One 4 sec blast, engine engaged, three short blasts, engine in reverse when you leave the slip. Your horn is tested and your neighbors will love you :D

I do make it a habit to blow one 4 sec signal when I leave my slip. I back directly into the marina channel.

I had one like the one from overtons and it sure was loud. I think it sounded louder because it put the noise right in your ear. I gave it to my son who was gratefull for the free horn untill he blew it. I wouldn't take it back, I think he threw it away. I now have one like Ross and it works great.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'm not sure how my dockmates would react to an early morning departure blast, unless they needed to get the heck outta my way.

Because there are only 18 boats in my slip way and on any given day most of them are uncrewed. I leave my slip in the same manner that I cross the road . I look both left and right and go. There are a few pretentious skippers that blow their damned horns just because they have them but mercifully they are very small number. If you want to leave then leave. Please don't disturb the peace and tranquility of the marina .

what ross said, but we have more boats--no one blasts the infernal noisemaker in the channel. every one is easily seen.

I'll second that.

Looks like you've got the same bronze lung-powered horn I've got, Ross. Plenty loud. In fact, often when I was working on my boat, my 3 year old nephew would climb aboard, and he eventually found the horns (the bronze, plus two freons). He really liked the horns. I had to hide them from him to protect my hearing.

You can always tell a newbie by the horn(s) blowing when they back out. Wonder what they do when they cross a street? :)
