Have a sailboat on Chicamauga Lake, on the Tenneseee River. The first mate and I wish to take the sailboat down the TennTom and then sail the intercoastal around the coast of Florida.

Because of limited experience , I would like to find a like- minded sailer that would be willing to join us on the trip south. We could help each other in the case of difficulty and provide a level of support that a single sailer would not have.

Thanks, Dave

Not in the cards for now, Dave, but surely one I plan to do in a few years as an "empty nester". Smooth sailing!

If you don't get a responder here, look into the AGLCA. We did "The Loop" a few years back in our H356 starting from Kentucky Lake & had the good fortune of meeting a couple of veteran sailors, and Loopers, from Connecticut before we got to Pickwick. We hung together until Mobile, and we learned a lot from them. Crossing The Gulf was net next hurdle, but while waiting for a weather window we made friends with a couple of other 'ragboats' with the same objective & we crossed together. They were Loopers as well. The AGLCA is probably 95% "stinkpot", but 100% good people. Join & fly the burgee & you will have countless friends along the way.

Consider the "whole enchilada". If you make it to The Keys, you can do the whole thing. Take a year. It's an awesome trip! Read "Honey, Let's Get A Boat" & get your juices flowing. "Skipper Bob" will build your confidence help you prepare.

I would go with you, but m'lady has not seen Lake Powell, as yet. But that's another story.

Good luck, Sinbad

Sinbad, thanks for the reply. I took a look at the AGLCA website. Interesting. It seems that most loopers were power boats. Did you do the Loop in your sailboat?

Can't go myself, but have made the trip. I could give you alot of advice if you have to go by yourself. It is a great trip, and you do realize you will have to take your mast down. There is a very low railroad bridge in Alabama you can't get under. :D

Robert, after reading several blogs... the advise is that the minium bridge height at normal pool is 52 feet. Dave

Hi Dave. I am referring to the "14-mile railroad bridge". At mile marker 13.3 on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway. I will quote from the Tenn-Tom Nitty-Gritty Cruise Guide, "In fact, the biggest obstacle is the railroad bridge at Mile 13.3 which normally is in the closed position. It's a swing span with as little as four (4) feet of vertical clearance in the closed position. Even if it's in the open position as you approach, call him to make sure it stays open. You might as well know, however, that if it's you versus a train, you will do the waiting. Call him on channel 13 in advance. It is called the 14 Mile railroad bridge because it is 14 miles to downtown Mobile. True, most overhead obstructions provide a minimum of 52 feet of vertical clearance at normal high water. But this can change over night if in the spring and raining. We enjoyed the 450 mile trip very much. There are several marina's on the waterway, but are far between when traveling by sailboat. We were in a power cruisier and made marina's by night, but traveled 90 to 100 miles a day. All in all, you will enjoy it and remember it for many years to come. Oh, and I never saw a sailboat on our trip with the mast up. I know several sailors who have made this trip over the years, and all took the mast down. I would do more research before I left with the mast up. A word of caution, after you leave Demopolis Lock & Dam Marina south, there are no services for the next 216 miles. Seriously. Hope you have seen "Deliverance". Just kidding.
