Special request please. My dad 93 yrs old lifetime sailor and current sailboat owner is asking me his son to take him sailing "once more". The problem I have is that his sailboat has a keel leak and I can't get it repaired fast enough and the boat rigged and launched before he passes away. He just got released from a week in the hospital and has been sent home with Hospice care and about 3 months of time left on his meter. We are doing his bucket list and the thing he wants most of all is to sail again. Just to be on the sound one afternoon under sail is all that would make this great guys life complete. I'm afraid to spend my last few months working on his boat and not making it happen and he also lives with me so I'm raking care of him through this. I'm cutting out the middle man (me) and his boat and just asking outright if someone who might be taking a casual sail one day very soon to help me make a life time sailor one with the sea and wind again. We had a slip in Mystic last year and he went aground at the rock pile bouy at by the lighthouse / Mystic river. Boat developed a leak and we hauled it. Surveyor inspected and work was to be done, but not in time I fear. He would be escorted by me, he is completely self contained and 1000% with it, a real nice guy and great sailor. He is you, but older and his boat is dry docked and sadly there is a time limit on this plea. Thank you so much for your consideration. Please email me and let me know what you think about this. I'm trying anything at this point.

That is bittersweet. I would think some Yacht Clubs or marinas in the area would be a good place to check.

I hope this happens. I lost my Dad last year (age 82) and one of my sharpest regrets is that I didn't get to take him out in our boat.

Cherish them while they're around.

I expect Dad will want to sail HIS boat for the one last time.
Is it not possible to apply plenty of sealant, launch and sail whilst pumping all the while.
Then lift out again as soon as the sail is over?
Clearly more expensive but at least its the real thing.

At one time all boats used to leak.

Spoke with Jeff and he is taking his Dad up to Canada for awhile which he explains is # 2 on his Dad's bucket list. They will call when they get back and we will set up to take he and his Dad sailing for the day.

Marc,
I just read this and as soon as I did I was going to check with the Admiral (mine of course) for the same. Sounds like you'd have a good deal more room than I. I'd love to crew your outing with them if you think you'd need the extra help with the extra passengers. And if you can't make it happen when they can I'm in, pending approval from the Admiral.

What a great gesture Mark, what an honor for you.

Swan, where in Canada are you going? If you are comming west (Alberta) there is a boat with your dad's name on it here. Anytime.

Shanker, I'm just the messenger but I understand he and his dad are going to New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Cape Bretton, then to Bar Harbor Maine, Cape Cod, and back home to Connecticut. :) I hope he shares some photos of a beautiful trip!

He'll be quite thankful with your offer but too far for you to pick them up lol

This is what make sailors some of the finest people in the world. I am somewhere between 65 and death and, thank God, still able to get out. "It's not the years, it's the milage." Indiana Jones. Not all "kids" will try to make their parents happy toward the end. A big hug to this man who loves his father this much.
