I am in the process of setting up my 1986 Oday 28 for Single Handling and need help. My boat has the Main Sheet Traveler on the cabin top and the sheeting is accomplished at a winch on the Cabin Top Port Side at the cockpit bulkhead. This location is hard to get at with wheel steering. Any suggestions?

I would also like to get the Mainsail Halyard from the mast to a more convienent location for hoisting and lowering. Any suggestions?

I did purchase a Wheel Pilot so this will help but I know it isn't failure proof but will help. I am an Older Sailor and can't get around like I used to but Love Sailing so if someone could help I would appreciate the assistance. Especially an O Day 28 owner with a cabin top traveler who single handles.

make the traveler lines real long and fix the cam cleats for it back behind the wheel. works ok but in way for passengers. We used the Main winch and relocated it the cabin top. added a turning block at the mast base. here's a pic. even though my traveler is across the companionway.

"Cam cleats are your friend" I'd say :) I actually use them for the jib sheets more then the traveler. You will also want the main sheet to be long enough to manage from behind the wheel; in case you need to let it out in a "hurry" :) good luck!

Many folks, when they move up from a tiller to a wheel, believe that they NEED to extend the mainsheet 'cuz that's what they'd been using on their smaller boats to control the mainsail. In many caes, older smaller boats didn't have adequate travelers to do so in gusts. On most boats with cabintop travelers the travelers should be used before ltting out the mainsheet. Why? 'Cus first it's easier, both to release and reposition and to extend the traveler lines, and second, because cranking back a mainsail once you let it out is SO much harder. Or, in a gust you could head up a lot.

Denis030,
Thank you for the suggestion of moving the Main Halyard Winch to the Cabin Top. That was something I didn't think of. I will go out and get Jam Cleats where they would be near my wheel for adjustments. Getting longer traveler control lines are also eazy to come by and will be working on that as well.

Stu
Thank you also!

Denis,

What did you use on your Deck Teak? It looks great! My teak is in good condition but I want to brighten it up and the look of yours is what I would like to have.

When I bought my O28 it came with a behind the mast roller furling. I questioned myself if I would keep it, but the more I used it the more I liked it. It really makes single handling easy. Reefing is a snap and no dropping the main and dealing with sail covers. If I ever get another boat it will be one of the first things I will add.

Thank you for the Photo's they help me alot. I have a better idea now on what I have to do and will be working on the layout this week.

At present I have a new Schaefer 1100 Roller Furling installed with New Forestay, Boomkicker to eliminate the topping lift, Neil Pryde Lazy Bag System which I haven't installed the Mast Lazy Jack Blocks on my mast. I was told to fasten them 70% up from the mast partner to the top of the mast. Does anyone see a problem with this? Tom's furling system looks good but I can't go that route at the present time. I never considered it. How does the reefing work out.My 28 needs to be first reefed for wind 15 to 25 knots.
Would a Backstay adjuster be wise for the split backstay? Have I missed anything?

Remember I am an Old Guy but willing to try my best to Single Hand my boat. There is nothing like the Peace of Sailing and moments of Terror. I hope the Terror part keeps me young.

Dodger for an O Day 28 with a Cabin top Main Traveler

I have a 28 that has been converted. I have Garhauer triple deck organizers with a Lewmar 16 self tailing winch on each side.
Thank you for the information and photos. I have one other question. Would you know who made your Dodger? I have been looking for one used but no luck. Sailing on the Great Lakes, a Dodger would extend my season. Any assistance would be appreciated.

My father in law made the dodger. We do a lot of fabbing ourselves. I'm in the process of sewing new cushion covers

Your very lucky person. The Dodger looks excellent.

One other question? I have an emergency tiller made of aluminum tubing and it looks factory. I know it should be inserted on the rudder post which is accessed through a screw cover on the helms persons seat. I unscrewed the cover and the interior of the rudder seams to be epoxied in. Is this the location for the emergency tiller? I just wanted to make sure before I get into removing the epoxy material. The original owner never used the emergency tiller and could not give me any information that made me feel sure that I was on the right track. if you have a photo this would help. Thank you again for all your help & suggestions.

Yes and don't loose it. it fits in the rudder post and the notch goes around the pin you see across the top. it's hard to move by hand but if the steering breaks.. it will get you home.

Correct.

Instead of waiting, try it out in nice weather, or when just motoring.

I did, and found out what I needed to know about how it worked well before I needed to use it in extremis.

I have removed some of the loose epoxy type material and have not found the pins to receive the emergency tiller. That's why I asked the question. How far down down the tube from the top of the rudder post should the tiller pins be located? I have about 1 1/2 inches exposed from the top and haven't found the two emergency tiller pins. I sure hope the MFG remembered to install them. Your help will be greatly appreciated. I'm concerned because I don't want to damage the rudders post.

Thank you for the input. I know you must have alot of heavy wind sail being from the San Francisco Bay area. Yours and Denis's help has been very informative. I am just trying to cover all the bases to make sure I am thinking all possibilities through. My next move after the Rudder Emergency Tiller resolution will be Jack Lines to tie off to with a lanyard. I understand that they should not run completely to the stern. Then I must figure out a way to get back on board should I go over the side (God Forbid). When you single handle do you have a trailing line in the water and boarding ladder down while sailing and not under power?
