Yahoo,
I started two outboards today and only had to remember what that turtle means. The two-stroke started after I got the turtle right, but the four-stroke Honda 9.9 is slow to start. It has an automatic choke which makes it cold-blooded. There's probably a way to adjust it, but I'll have to figure out what the manual is saying. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Turtle means slow; rabbit means fast ;)

If it's the first time this season starting the 4-stroke (you ARE using brand-new gas, right?) and it's hard starting, the carb might need cleaning. Are the plugs clean and gapped correctly?

How does the 4-stroke run after a good warm-up? Any hesitation? Rough idle or stalls out?

New gas all around, with a manual choke I think it would start right up. I'll check the plugs but it was difficult last season after we bought the boat and we didn't use it for more than an hour, (launch service). After it starts the outboard runs great like last season.

The two-cycle turtle jumped over the start line so I just have to remember to set the idle on the right spot. :bang: It starts and runs fine.

Get a couple of cans of Sea Foam and run it through the motor. That will help immensely to clean out carbon buildup.

I have a gallon, are you talking about 8 or 10 ounces? Been using it in my backhoe which is 40 years+, starts every time with a squirt of starting fluid (ether).

What are they doing to engines these days? My 20 year old 2 cycle lawnboy is running on last years gasoline and starting on the first pull most of the time.

When I first bought my fishing boat used, with a 1985 Merc, Sea Foam was suggested to "clean it out." The program was to use a pint of SF to 3 gallons of fuel (which is quite a bit more than the normal maintenance dose). Run the motor 15 minutes, let it sit 15 minutes, run it 15 minutes, let it sit 15 minutes. Do that a bunch of times, like 10 "cycles." Then, use it as usual.

Now mine was a 2 stroke, but it definitely helped and was much less smokey. Now I use a pint or 2 of SF to 12 gallons of fuel as a maintenance dose.

While Lawnmowers and snowblowers/leafblowers etc will run on just about any fuel - unless you look in there and it looks like shellack floating around - outboards are a bit trickier. While my lawn equipment starts no matter what age the fuel (except counting in years, of course) my 2-stk outboard has to be run dry OR flushed out with non- mixed fuel before starting - then draind thru the bowl needle. my 4strk is different still. Because I used to drain it and it cost me a bunch of $$ for a new carb, I let the carb sit the winter with fuel(and Stabil, of course). In the spring(this week for me) I spray a short shot of ether to start with fresh fuel; run till warm then squirt small amounts of carb cleaner into inlet while running. For the rest of the summer it takes one pull (when dead cold) without the choke out then the second one with the choke for a start.

Hi Winkfish,
I used the Sea Foam and did 8 cycles, the last four showed smokey exhaust so I knew it was running through. The outboard started 1st try everytime after starting the treatment. I then let it sit for an hour + and it started 1st try again. It's probably the LOU issue (lack of use). The boat goes in the water in two weeks so I can run it a bit more often then. Thanks.

Glad it worked, my friend. (I'm now wiping sweat off my brow to know that a suggestion of mine worked!! :D)
